    The Raft of Medusa

“The Raft of the Medusa” is a painting by Theodore Gericault and hangs in the Louvre, Paris. It depicts the true story of a shipwreck and of a hastily constructed raft upon which at least 157 people were cast adrift for 13 days and endured starvation, dehydration, cannibalism and madness. The work is a diabolical duel between cornet and trombone, a violent tone poem showing off the techniques of the soloists. There is no light in this piece, no triumph, only sadness.Duration: 6:00 minutesPercussion: 2 Players playing tom-tom, woodblocks and bass drumGrade 6: Very Difficult Championship Section Bands

    Diversions after Benjamin Britten

Aria - His Depth LUCY PANKHURST Scherzo - His Vitality SIMON DOBSON March - His Sympathy PAUL McGHEE Toccata - His Skill GAVIN HIGGINS Diversions after Benjamin Britten was devoted by Paul Hindmarsh as a centenary tribute to Britain's foremost composer of the 20th century. It is a companion piece to Variations on a Theme of Michel Tippett, although in this case the theme is not musical, but the composer himself. The four leading young composers were invited to create their own personal reflections on four aspects of Britten's character. His Depth refers to the emotional and symbolic subtexts underpinning Britten's operas. His Vitality reminds us that Britten loved tennis and fast cars in his youger days. His Sympathy is ecvoative or Britten's pacifism, while His Skill pays tribute to composer's consummate creativity. At its premiere, these virtuoso inspirations were prefaced and separated by the four strains of Britten's ceremonial Fanfare for St. Edmundsbury. This design is recommended as an optional means of presenting the four contrasting movements. The fanfare is published by Boosey & Hawkes, edition. Duration: 14 mins (18 mins including Britten's Fanfare) Grade 6 Complete edition ? 85 plus postage and packing, extra scores ? 15 Separate items ? 35 each plus postage and packing PHM003

    Icebreaker

“Icebreaker” was originally written for Superbrass in March 2012 and recorded in it’s original brass dectet and percussion form on their “Brass Taps” CD. The work begins with tumultuous fanfare, shrouded by thick chords in the lower brass. This fanfare-like material leads to a biting statement from the trombones. An ‘icy’ gritty section, once again played by the trombones grows in energy, punctuated by the return of the fanfares. The horns, providing a little respite, emerge in a quiet restrained line, which is coloured by the rest of the ensemble. Before fully coming to fruition, the horn line is quickly cut-short and subsumed by the sudden return of the energetic material from the other instruments, which grows to the end of the piece.Duration: 4:30 minutesPercussion: 2 players playing drum kit, bass drum and tam-tam.Grade 6: Very Difficult Championship Section Bands

    Set To

“Set To” is dedicated to London Brass and arranged for brass band by Christopher Houlding. It was commissioned by the Aldeburgh Foundation and received its first performance on August 24th 1993 at the Maltings, Snape. Originally divided into two movements, a pensive and richly harmonic Blues and an aptly named Bacchanale, sometimes slow but mostly fast and furious. “I remember playing the original brass ensemble version of “Set To” numerous times in the early nineties with London Brass and always wondered if the composer would consider writing something for Brass Band. As Director of The Guildhall Brass Band, a possible performance opportunity arose in 2010 and I successfully approached Mark and gained his permission to scale it up for brass band with added percussion parts. I conducted the premier of this new Brass Band version at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in February 2011 with the composer present and he liked it. Although very contemporary compared to most brass music, I feel that Mark's easily accessible style makes this rhythmically quirky and harmonically 'bluesy' work a really interesting concert piece, suitable for any occasion” - Chris Houlding.Duration: 7:30 minutesPercussion: 3 players playing timpani, suspended cymbal, snare drum, hi-hat, triangle, claves, glockenspiel, vibraslap, xylophone, egg shaker, cowbell, temple blocks, wood blocks and lions roar.Grade 6: Very Difficult Championship Section Bands

    Siegfrieds Rhine Journey

Arranged by Duncan Wilson, this extended orchestral selection from “G?tterd?mmerung”, is one of the epic four-opera’s called “Der Ring des Nibelungen” by Wagner. “Siegfried's Rhine Journey" is often presented outside the opera house and is published separately. This excerpt includes especially composed endings by Richard Wagner himself so that the work is better able to stand on its own as a complete composition.Duration: 11:00 minutesPercussion: 3 Players playing timpani, glockenspiel, triangle and cymbalsGrade 6: Very Difficult Championship Section Bands

    Fanfares, Marches, Hymns and Finale

“Fanfares, Marches, Hymns and Finale” is a series of self-referential movements, each composed around an attitude expressed in the title rather than for any actual utilitarian use. Hence, it would be difficult to march to most of “Marches”, although it is composed of martial rhythms and associative figures. One could, however, sing the pentatonic (five note) main theme from “Hymns”, which is composed in an American folk-hymn style and set in an Atmosphere evocative of meditation and reflection, although there is no text associated with the themes. “Fanfares” is based upon an opening six-note motif first heard in unison. It precedes and announces the following three movements. As the plural aspect of the title indicates, “fanfares” open and close the movement itself. Needless to say, the spirited “Finale” brings the piece to a close.Duration: 11:00 minutesPercussion: 3 Players playing timpani, snare drum, triangle, suspended cymbal, bass drum and crash cymbalsGrade 6: Very Difficult Championship Section Bands

Ocean of Storms - Dan Price

Brass Band Concert Series - Grade 6 Ocean of Storms or Oceanus Procellarum is one of only a few lunar maria or 'seas' on the moon's surface to be called an ocean due to its immense size. This evocative work by Dan Price takes draws inspiration from not only the idea of a lunar impact but also from the name the crater has been given. The work opens atmospherically with a sense of weightlessness and introduces the main thematic idea. As the work develops the turbulent ebb and flow of the storm increases in its ferocity with solo spots for solo cornet, solo euphonium, flugel horn and baritone.
