Brass Monkey's Christmas - Gavin Somerset

With so many bands now using the Brass Monkeys publications with their training bands, this latest release of the 'Brass Monkeys' series is our largest to date and includes a variety of works from the festive season. In this substantial publication of music, simple carols are included that can be performed to accompany an audience singing, or as standalone items. Some novelty choices of music have been included too. The 'Little Drummer Boy' is designed to give your budding percussionist the limelight they've craved all year around, whilst 'O Holy Night' will teach your front row the importance of the 12/8 time signature. Of course, no Christmas compilation would be complete without 'Jingle Bells' & 'We Wish You A Merry Christmas'. This publication will ensure your Brass Monkeys are not left out in the cold this Christmas! Tubilation - Keiron Anderson

A fantastic tuba feature with brass band backing. Driving semiquaver rhythms push this piece forwards whilst remaining away from the centre of attention which is undoubtedly the big old tuba! Full of semiquavers and scales rushing up to the top of the range of the instrument, there can be no doubt that the tuba is the star of the show. The solo part is carefully thought through with enough rests to make it approachable, while the syncopatino in the other parts give the music an energy that is maintained to the very final flourish, instigated by a demisemiquaver scale run on the tuba! Intermediate and above ensemble parts, but the solo tuba part needs a fairly skilled and confident player to get the most out of this piece.

Lament - to the Unknown - Andrew Stevenson

Lament ? to the Unknown was written in the memory of Rob Southwick, who passed away in Easter 2012. Rob was a talented musician who worked with many local music and drama groups around Doncaster; this piece pays homage to the immense musicianship and talent of Rob.The piece itself is very simple, both rhythmically and technically. The tempo is slow and calm, representing a reflective hymn. The basis of the piece is built on dissonant chords and atmospheric percussion which creates a wonderful soundscape of colour. The falling fourths of the distant trumpet calls emulate feelings of sadness and mourning and the somewhat disjointed melodies give the piece a mysterious sound. The piece grows to an emotional climax before settling down for a chilling end.
