New Beginnings was commissioned by the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and was first performed by The National Children's Brass Band of Great Britain in August 2021.It describes in sonic terms the effect that energy can create, both musically and emotionally. Here, in a burst of vibrant rhythmic patterning, and dedicated to the young players of this famous brass band, New Beginnings is born.There are three sections:From the start, it is driven by the percussion section, who push the energy through a sequence of mysterious and joyous moments.After a sonorous climax, the music subsides to a slower, romantic middle section where the earlier rhythmic energy is transformed into melodic playing from the brass.As the Finale begins, earlier themes are combined, first with a fugato which passes the melodies around the band and then unites in a recapitulation that brings the whole composition to a rousing finish as the romantic hymn makes a final appearance.Duration: 10.00

A Musical PortraitRedbad was written for the Championship Section of the Dutch Brass Band Championships, and thus it contains plenty of musical and technical challenges. In this work of seven connected movements we get to know Redbad, who was the King of the Frisians from c. 680 to 719. The composer drew his inspiration from historical information, but also from stories, anecdotes, myths and legends around this figure. The themes within the composition are closely interwoven whereas the music is varied and appealing, from heroic motifs to the melancholy of elegies. Impressive tutti passages alternate with fragments that sound more open and in which various players can take centre stage. To crown it all, the work concludes with a majestic finale.Duration: 17.45

Back on Track is a spectacular composition originally written for Concert Band. Otto M. Schwarz composed an opening fanfare for the beginning, which can also be played as a short 'teaser' at festive events. Franco Cesarini was commissioned to write A Glorious Fanfare by the Band Association of the Zug Canton in Switzerland (Zuger Blasmusikverband), to celebrate the centenary of the Association (1922-2022). The composition is the third in a trilogy of scintillating concert opening pieces (which make up opus 38), together with A Triumphant Fanfare and A Joyful Fanfare. A majestic fanfare entrusted to the trumpets introduces the piece. Subsequently a cantabile variant of the same theme is presented leading to a finale with rich and impressive sounds. A Road Less Travelled By was commissioned by Palangos Orkestras for the Championship Section of the 2020 European Brass Band Championships held in Palanga, Lithuania.The following was written by the composer, Philip Sparke:The title alludes to a poem by American author, Robert Frost, which appeared in his 1916 collection, Mountain Intervals: The Road Not Taken.In common with most of my larger works, this piece in not programmatic, but purely abstract; there is no extrinsic musical story. The choice of title shares my view of how composers can often develop. There can be no 'destination' in a composer's career, but rather a continuing journey to an unknown place. From piece to piece a composer needs to decide his or her next steps, never really knowing where they might lead. As Frost so eloquently describes, these sorts of instinctive decisions guide all our lives.Set in three movements, which play without a break, A Road Less Travelled By opens with a Moto Perpetuo firmly rooted in classical language, form and syntax. A continuous river of semiquavers, veering from melody to accompaniment and back again, adds drive, every and motion. The second movement, Nocturne, is in the form of a free fantasia; solos for vibraphone, flugel horn and euphonium set the stage for a central cornet solo, quietly echoed by the full band. A triumphal climax is reached before the movement dissolves into a Scherzo Finale. Mercurial and quixotic in nature, this third movement starts jovially until trios for trombones and horns darken the atmosphere. A change of mood and meter leads to a reprise of the opening and a return of the cornet melody, this time accompanied by figures derived from the scherzo theme. A brief coda based on earlier material drives the piece to a close.Duration: 15.30

£43.00Fantasia on Themes by Purcell (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Shepherd, Ian
Fantasia consists of three distinct sections that use thematic material from three separate pieces by Henry Purcell. The first section is based on the march from Funeral Music for Queen Mary which is dramatically dark and powerful but also uplifting. The Second section uses the devastatingly beautiful aria Dido's Lament or When I am laid in earth from the opera Dido and Aeneas as its basis and builds to enormous proportions, unlike the original aria. The third section begins with a haunting reference to the Rondo from Abdelazer. Gradually, this builds towards an exciting re-statement of the theme in the first section to the finale. Duration: 8.30
