Passing by on parade and then leaving the town with the music getting quieter and quieter and the band getting further and further away......The Longest Day is a 1962 American epic war film based on Cornelius Ryan's 1959 non-fiction book of the same name about the D-Day landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944. The film was produced by Darryl F. Zanuck for 20th Century Fox.The theme song was written by Paul Anka. Anka was a rising singer, songwriter and actor. The theme is used sporadically through the movie as background music played by a piano in the RAF Officers Club and on a harmonica. The theme is also played at the end.Anka talked about starring in the movie with producer Daryl Zanuck. It occurred to him to ask Zanuck who was doing the music for the film, and the response was that there would be no music. Melodies then started banging at me, and he wrote the song "The Longest Day." He then made a demo record for $250 and shipped to Zanuck in France, after which he received a telex, "Dear Paul, there will be music."The theme is quite simple but yet conveys a martial feel. The movie opens with the familiar opening four notes of Beethovens 5th symphony that interesting corresponds to the morse code letter of V-3 dots and a dash. £66.00Spiral - Marc Jeanbourquin
Marc Jeanbourquin composed 'Spiral' during a music camp, for himself and 9 other fellow musicians. Due to the success of this piece, some years later, he has taken the main theme and developed it, with a kind of tribute to Camille Saint-Saens, one of his favourite composers. The constant changes between the minor and major keys, and between the often changing 2 and 3 feeling, with the occasional 2/4 bar thrown in, do not disrupt the flow of the piece in the slightest; in fact it is what has inspired the title. A percussion interlude, which is broken up by the unregularly occurring meter, brings the piece to a restatement of the original theme, which then ends in a large crescendo. Spiral is perfectly suited to either the opening or the close of any concert.

MY STRENGTH, MY TOWER Rhapsodic Variations (Brass Band Set) - Dean Goffin
This music consists of a theme followed by five extensive variations. The theme is the composer's own tune set to the words, 'Thee will I love, my strength, my tower', a hymn by Johann Scheffler translated by John Wesley. A strong modal flavour is characteristic of the theme. Variation 1: This is a light and graceful variation with a good deal of imitative writing. It leads, without a break, into the next variation. Variation 2: Fire and ferocity are asked for in the course of this variation. Variation 3: This variation demonstrates the original approach of the composer. Solo lines for cornet and euphonium are included with their arabesques and arpeggii. Variation 4: Taking the form of a passacaglia, the 'ground' is given out at once by the basses. Fragments of the 'ground', plain or decorated, are combined and used in a number of ways, revealing the composer's mastery of counterpoint. Variation 5: The briskly moving and scintillating final variation abounds in sudden variations of dynamic. The tempo remains constant until an increase is called for in the coda. This 'contest' version has been prepared by Brian Bowen who was asked to re-work the percussion part and introduce a repiano cornet part (Salvation Army band publications do not, in general, have a part for repiano cornet).

This arrangement (or edition) for brass band will give the possibility for more performances of this fine work by Hovland. The composer, before his death, examined my work and made no suggestions for changes, and his approving comments were complimentary and encouraging. The work was originally written for Concert Band in 1966 as Op. 54a to St. Olaf College Band in the US. It was transcribed in 1967 for symphony orchestra as Op. 54b by the composer himself. The challenges in arranging the piece for brass band were mostly concerned with satisfactorily covering the upper register used by piccolo, flutes and clarinets, and while there are wonderful brass players around who have amazing high registers, I have aimed this edition at a level achievable by reasonably good brass band players who are willing to give time and effort into the proper preparation and delivery of the music. Having worked on this new edition with a top-class brass band, I think it sounds wonderful and interestingly different to the original. Besides the obvious differences of tone-colour and absent high notes, I have used in my scoring, the option for using a vibraphone in place of a celeste. Vaughan Williams, in his Variations for brass band writes for celeste, but because the instrument is quite rare, performances have been mostly given using a glockenspiel- but this, of course sounds two octaves higher than it was intended. I think that vibraphone and brass is an excellent combination and recommend it without hesitation in this piece. Every detail of articulation and dynamic has been considered, so in order to keep the integrity of the music, please do not change anything in the name of "interpretation". The attacks in Brussels on 22 March 2016 created a shockwave throughout Belgium and the rest of the world. Equally, the attacks in Paris and Nice led to great public indignation, fear and disbelief.What has happened to the western world? Have our cultures grown apart to such an extent that we do not understand each other anymore? Bert Appermont's intention was to voice certain emotions that these acts of terror have caused: particularly fear, grief, anger, and helplessness. He uses the French children's song Au Claire de la Lune as a connecting thread throughout the work.This piece is also about hope and faith in another world, andis meant to pay homage to all victims, resulting in a dignified remembrance. The musical development is presented in four through-composed parts, titled Innocence, In Cold Blood, In Memoriam - We Shall Rise Again and A New Day.This work was commissioned by the Brassband Obersterreich (Brass Band Upper Austria) to be played at the European Brass Band Championships 2017.
