This composition is a very challenging one for the soloist and requires the accompaniment to be subservient at all times. The soloist will find it helpful to, generally, adopt a very light and playful style. As a young aspiring cornet player, the composer was influenced by a number of soloists of that day, one being Del Staigers of the Goldman Band in the USA. Many of the musical motifs reflect that influence and it is hoped that this solo will, in turn, inspire the many aspiring cornet players of today.

A gentle solo for cornet with band accompaniment. Paseo is a Spanish word for a leisurely walk or stroll: the soloist takes the musical line for a walk with no great sense of hurry, and although there is one moment where the pleasantness of the stroll is threatened, it quickly passes and the good mood is resumed. Technically it needs a good sense of cantabile and control over the range from low D to D two octaves higher. To allow the soloist to sing through without fighting the accompaniment, the section cornets and percussion are omitted. This solo was written at the request of David Daws and The International Staff Band. David liked the solo 'Kim' by Allan Street and wanted a solo in similar style. It requires musicianship beyond mere technique and calls for keen interpretive skills. Built around 'He giveth more grace' and an arrangement of 'There is a name I love to hear', there is plenty of scope, in a variety of styles, for the soloist's artistry to show through.

HAPPY DAY, A (Cornet Solo with Brass Band Set) - Erik Leidzen
This composition was awarded first prize in the Theme and Variations Section of the 1926 Salvation Army Band Music Competition and has remained popular with cornet soloists and audiences ever since. This was the first in a trilogy of cornet solos with the word 'day' in the title written by Erik Leidzen, the others being 'Happy all the Day' and 'Wondrous Day'.

Poor Parisa Love was your Achilleswas commissioned by the Flowers Band for the 2022 Brass in Concert Championships held at the Sage in Gateshead. It was written for the Soprano Cornet legendPaulRichards. The work is inspired by the tragic love story of Paris and Helen of Troy during the Trojan War. The work opens with a mournful and sombre tone, reflecting the sadness of Parisa destiny to fall in love with the queen of Sparta. The melody becomes more optimistic, reflecting the blossoming romance between Paris and Helen. However, the music returns taking a sombre turn, reflecting the awkwardness of the situation, representing the beginning of the Trojan War and Parisa tragic downfall.

DAVID OF THE WHITE ROCK (Cornet Solo with Brass Band Set) - Ray Bowes
This melody is reputed to have originated in Caernarvonshire, North Wales. Tradition holds that a bard called David, lying on his deathbed, called for his harp and performed this plaintive tune, expressing a desire that it should be played at his funeral. Ever since the tune has been called by his name and that of his house 'Garagwen' ('Druid Stone' or 'White Rock'). The solo is not just a slow melody with brass band accompaniment but is a composite whole, the band needing as much sensitivity as the soloist in the presentation.
