Gull Dances (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Johns, Terry

The composer, who lives and works at the edge of the Forth estuary in Edinburgh has been inspired here by the intriguing "tap" dance that the gulls perform on the grass at certain times to encourage worms to break the surface. The middle movements describe the birds' "dancing" in flight, with a waltz and a slow soaring melody. The piece was written for the COOP Glasgow Brass Band on the occasion of their winning the Scottish brass band championship in 2009 and was broadcast on BBC Scotland's "Classics Unwrapped" in November of that year. Dignity - Alan Fernie

Alan Fernie created this beautiful work in support of a charitable project, known in 2005 as Brass Band Aid. The organisation called for original compositions to be included in a follow-up CD release - Into Africa to help raise funds for projects in Adet, Ethiopia, Africa, and to build awareness of the Make Poverty Historycampaign. This work offers a quiet, peaceful interlude. No technical fireworks, just a simplicity which reflects the dignity of the people in Ethiopia, despite the hardships they endured.‘Dignity’ was in fact the second donation of music made by Alan Fernie in support of the project (his first being African Funk which has featured in many a band’s programme). It was recorded by the Scottish Co-Op Band and featured on the Brass Band Aid CD - Into Africa.

Highland Cathedral - Ulrich Roever & Michael Korb - Simon Kerwin

This lovely melody was composed by two German musicians who tried to emulate the popularity of the famous Scottish tune 'Amazing Grace'. The piece was an instant success and achieved a substantial degree of popularity after it was featured in the film, Four Weddings and a Funeral. It is usually performed with just pipes and drums, however this arrangement succeeds in joining this traditional classical melody, with a steady drum beat, and flowing contrapuntal descants and harmonies to create an epic opus. The arrangement was made for a performance in the Gala Concert in the Albert Hall, London, when it was performed by the Scottish Brass Band Champions, Scottish Co-op Band. The arrangement is functional with or without Bagpipes.
