Written at the request of Bandmaster Christopher Ward and the Eastern Michigan Divisional Band of The Salvation Army (USA), it was premiered at the 2019 Autumn Praise Festival in Rochester, Michigan which featured the Eastern Michigan Divisional Band and Choir, and the Chicago Staff Band. The piece is based on the popular modern hymn by Keith and Kristin Getty and Stuart Townend, Come People of the Risen King. Originally conceived as a ceremonial work for the Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment, Veni, Sancte Spiritus was written for a Thanksgiving Service at St Clement Danes Church - the Central Church of the RAF in London. This evocative piece was inspired by the church's thousand-year-old architecture and resonant acoustic, creating a soundscape that is both reverent and atmospheric. In adapting the work for brass band, the composer introduces Vaughan Williams's hymn tune Down Ampney, seamlessly woven into the final sections of the piece. This lyrical addition enhances the spiritual tone of the music, aligning perfectly with the hymn text 'Come Down, O Love Divine', and lending the work its new title and emotional depth. Torsion (Score & Parts) - Simon Dobson
Torsion was commissioned by the Leyland Band and first performed on 23 January 2010 at the Royal Northern College of Music Festival of Brass, Manchester, by Leyland Band conducted by Jason Katsikaris. This colourful and dynamic work is the most personal and ambitious that Simon Dobson composed during his residency with the Lancashire brass band. The dictionary defines torsion as the state of being twisted and the composer interprets this as the imagined dis-torsions and con-torsions of Time, Light and Sound in three contrasting movements. Simon Dobson fuses the traditional brass band sound with drive and energy of pop and funk jazz with optional digitally distorted 'echoes' providing added aural confusion at the points of climax. Although composed as a substantial concert work, Torsion would also make a challenging test-piece for contesting brass bands in the elite divisions.

The Dreaded Groove And Hook (Score & Parts) - Simon Dobson
The Dreaded Groove and Hook is an up-tempo acid-jazz number that draws inspiration from bands like Jamiroquai and The Youngblood Brass Band. The groove in question is the main tune that is shared round the band, whilst the hook, in 'pop' terms, is the catchy bit of the song. The whole band joins in to play a huge 'riff' that acts as a chorus to the jazz-like verses.The piece was commissioned by Jason Katsikaris and The Leyland Band, who gave the first performance as part of their programme for the Brass In Concert Championships, held at The Sage, Gateshead on the 16th November 2008. VIEW SCORE PDF Caprice was written for Matthew van Emmerik, to showcase his virtuosity in an engaging piece of concert music. The work is in theme and variation form, with the primary material being the theme from the last of Paganini's Ventiquattro Capricci per violino solo, a collection of 24 caprices for solo violin. This theme has been the inspiration for similar works by many composers since it was first published, including Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninov, Benny Goodman and Andrew Lloyd Webber. In this work, the famous theme is treated to a more contemporary approach. The first variation, Capricious, relies on motor rhythms and jagged dialogues between the soloist and the band. It is couched in an organic scale reminiscent of the Phrygian mode. The second variation, Sad, is in direct contrast, acting as a traditional ballad and allowing the soloist to explore the expressive side of the instrument. The third variation, Energetic, is a micro set of variations in itself, designed to display the soloist's innovative technique and stamina. Each section is more challenging than the last, until the work concludes with a whirlwind dance at breakneck speed. Like all of Batterham's recent work, the musical language of Caprice draws upon classical, jazz, funk and ska elements to create a unique sound where anything can happen, and probably will. VIEW SCORE PDF Cornish Fantasy was written for Kidlington Concert Brass's euphonium soloist Benjamin Abbott to perform in their Autumn 2021 series of concerts and contests. Based around a series of Cornish folk tunes, it pays tribute to Ben's Cornish roots, and in particular to his banding education with the Camborne Town Band. The solo opens with the 'unofficial Cornish anthem' Trelawny, which is followed with a series of virtuoso cadenzas. After these is an up-tempo jig in several segments, containing the traditional tunes Camborne Hill, Pendeen Jig, Newlyn Jig, Pencarrow, and Off She Goes, the latter two at a breakneck pace that carries through to a triumphant close. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor is a British composer, who, from a young age, showed talent on the violin and entered the Royal College of Music, studying with Charles Villers Standford. His music become so popular that his Hiawatha trilogy was the second most performed choral piece (joint with Mendelssohn's Elijah, and only beaten by Handel's Messiah) with choral societies up and down the British Isles. In fact, Hiawatha was arranged by Charles Godfrey as a test-piece for the 1902 National Brass Band Championship of Great Britain, held at Crystal Palace.Commissioned by the theatre impresario Herbert Beerbohm, Coleridge-Taylor composed incidental music for His Majesty's Theatre London production of the Shakespeare play, Othello, in the West End, in 1909. In 1912, the play opened to the public, with a suite of five movements put together soon afterwards. The Dance, arranged here by Rob Bushnell, makes a great concert opener.This arrangement is for the British-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. Composer Nathanael Watchorn revisits a melody and harmonic framework originally conceived for an unrealised project - material that, even at its inception, carried the gentle strength and stillness of a benedictory chorus. Sensing its innate sense of calm and assurance, Watchorn sought to give the music new life through words that would illuminate its emotional core. Those words came from his father, Major Julian Watchorn, whose poetic text - titled Benediction: The Hope of Christ - speaks of grace, love, joy, and the sustaining power found in Christ.
