VIEW SCORE PDF Capriccio for Brass Band (Robbert Vos) was the winner of both the overall prize decided by the judges and Public Commendation prize for the 2020 International Brass Band Composer Competition, a contest that included some 92 entries from around the world. The composer writes: 'My Capriccio for Brass Band is a lively, intense and virtuosic piece based on several thematic, rhythmical and harmonic ideas which are developed during the piece. It is non-programmatic and not based on a storyline. The middle section, in contrary, is in more of a minimalistic style, where there is room to create a mysterious and open atmosphere. Rhythmical elements are quoted from the opening movement, whilst clashing chords are used to build up tension. The last movement builds to a big climax, where several of the compositorial ideas used before come together for the finale.' PDF download includes score and full set of parts. This highly descriptive and personal work for brass band is autobiographical, and based on a seven-year period of the composer Fendall Hill's life. He comments: "...external events had severe personal consequences, and my previously self assured self woke in the early mornings, way before my body wanted. My mind would fret, regret, and attempt to fix things beyond my control or powers, carving out an anxiety-shaped hole in my soul. This piece is an exploration of the sheer range of thought processes I went through, the mind dances I would perform to either calm myself back to sleep, or somehow come to terms with my situation. So often I would get to the point of mental exhaustion after phases of semi-calm, imagined alternate realities, and sheer panic. Your mind knows there is no benefit to worrying, but that doesn't stop the flow of emotions, the fear, and the anxiety." Originally conceived as a ceremonial work for the Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment, Veni, Sancte Spiritus was written for a Thanksgiving Service at St Clement Danes Church - the Central Church of the RAF in London. This evocative piece was inspired by the church's thousand-year-old architecture and resonant acoustic, creating a soundscape that is both reverent and atmospheric. In adapting the work for brass band, the composer introduces Vaughan Williams's hymn tune Down Ampney, seamlessly woven into the final sections of the piece. Freaks! was written for Lisa Sarasini in 2006 and first performed by her with Zone One Brass at the Royal College of Music, London. He also recorded a rough demo of the track, and was one of the songs he gave to music manager Nigel Martin-Smith on a cassette tape as part of his audition to join a boy-band.In his autobiography A Better Me, Gary revealed that Martin-Smith was so impressed by the tape, that he didn't realise it was Gary singing.
