The Civil Defenders - Sir Patrick Moore - Rodney Newton

The Civil Defence Association of Great Britain was formed as a support body for the Civil Defence Service and, while the Service had its own march, the Association did not - until recently. Sir Patrick Moore CBE FRS, astronomer, television personality extraordinaire, retired xylophonist, pianist and composer, was approached in the hope that he might provide a suitable march for the Civil Defence Association. Although now musically inactive through illness, he produced from his vast collection of marches written over a long period, the present one which he entitled, The Civil Defenders. Although originally scored for piano, Sir Patrick enlisted the help of his old friend and musical collaborator, Rodney Newton, who has arranged versions for brass and wind bands. The style of Civil Defenders is that of a traditional British 'road march' and embodies all the panache and gusto which that implies.

The Patriots - Jan de Haan

The Dutch patriottentijd (literally 'Time of the Patriots') was a period of political instability in the 1780s. The country was led by regents who were occupied with their own personal interests rather than dedicating themselves to the needs of the people. In this revolutionary period, the devoted republican Patriots were in conflict with the Orangists. A civil war followed, in which the Patriots were beaten and driven away by a Prussian army. This composition is an abstract piece inspired by the Patriots. The thematic material is based on the Dutch war song 'Merck toch hoe sterck'. Its powerful minor melody, which has its origins in the Eighty Years' War, is recognizable throughout the work, presented in variations of constantly shifting character.

Orion - Jan Van der Roost

There are all sorts of marches: fast and slow, solemn and energetic, military and civil, procession and funeral. Orion is a so-called 'slow march'. However the moderate tempo does not make a passive or heavy impression. On the contrary, this march contains natural optimism and spontaneity. The persistant 'pulse' gives this majestic march a noble character

DIFFICULTY: 1st+. DURATION: 3 minutes. This spiritual is one of the most popular anthems to come out of the civil rights movement in the US, and became an almost unofficial anthem for the movement when Nina Simone took on the song in the 1960's. ‘The Pride of the Wolverines’ is a superb but lesser known march from the pen of JP Sousa which deserves to be better known. The Wolverine is a stocky and muscular carnivore, closely resembling a small bear, which can be found in remote reaches of the Northern Hemisphere. The US state of Michigan uses the Wolverine as it’s mascot because of its reputation for strength and ferocity out of proportion to its size.In the American Civil War, many particularly from Detroit joined the Michigan Brigade, nicknamed ‘The Wolverines’ by their famous leader General Custer.Instrumentation: Soprano, Solo, 2nd and 3rd Cornets Flugelhorn Solo, 1st and 2nd Tenor Horns 1st and 2nd Baritone 1st, 2nd and Bass Trombones Euphonium Eb and Bb Basses Percussion: Drum Kit
