    Joy to the World

Music for Brass Band Duration: 3:00 MinutesPercussion: 5 PlayersTimpani, Suspended Cymbal, Snare Drum, Tubular Bells and GlockenspielAll Rights ReservedProgramme Notes"Joy to the World" is a popular Christmas Carol with words by Isaac Watts. As of the late 20th century, "Joy to the World" was the most published Christmas hymn in North America. The words of the hymn are by the English writer Watts are based on Psalm 98, 96:11-12 and Genesis 3: 17-18. The version of this carol usually heard today is from an edition by Lowell Mason and is named “Antioch” and attributed as "arranged by Handel”. This tune has the first four notes in common with the chorus “Lift up your heads” from the Messiah and the third line recalls “Comfort ye” from the same work. But this resemblance is often dismissed as a chance resemblance by Handel scholars today. Another theory is its similarity to a tune called “Comfort” and associated with Charles Wesley’s hymn “O Joyful Sound”, which was written some three years earlier than Lowell Mason’s “Antioch” in 1833. This carol has been recorded by many artists such as Andy Williams, The Supremes, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Johnny Cash, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Vic Damone and Mariah Carey.

The Huron Carol - Trad. - Andrew Wainwright

An arrangement of the beautiful Canadian Christmas hymn (Canada's oldest Christmas song), which is also known as 'Twas in the Moon of Wintertime'. This is an atmospheric setting which features various soloists around the band.'In The Huron Carol, Andrew responds to the ethereal quality and wintery mood of Canada's oldest Christmas song, setting this beautifully simple tune in an ambiguous, Downie-Himes inspired landscape. The layering of texture is magical.' Paul Hindmarsh, British Bandsman magazine

Mitt hjerte alltid vanker - Fantasi - Hans Adolph Brorson - Svein H. Giske

This arrangement was commissioned by B3 (The Bergen Woodwind Ensemble).B3 is a large woodwind ensemble located in Bergen with a mix of professional and amateur players. My Heart Remains in Wonder is a well-known Christmas hymn in Scandinavia. I wanted my version to be different to the traditional hymn tune style in which it is normally performed. One day I was outside walking and this idea came to me: an ostinato-like, mechanical skeleton of arpeggio semiquavers on which I could 'hang' the melody. However, I also wanted to do the melody line a bit different. The inspiration for this comes from folk music and the way fiddlers hardly ever lift their bow off the strings when they play. Because of this, it is important that the melody is played in a very sostenuto style in this arrangement. The harmonies lie somewhere between jazz and folk music with a little nod towards Grieg (himself heavily influenced by folk music) in the slow middle section.

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel - 15th Century French Traditional - John Barber

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel is a Christian Hymn for Christmas and is a translation of the Latin hymn, Veni, Veni, Emmanuel with the origins of the text stretching back as far as at least the 15th Century. In this realisation of the hymn, the melody and scoring is underpinned throughout by a tonic pedal and a relentless ostinato played on the vibraphone. This provides an almost hypnotic and minimalistic quality, only moving away from this rigidity when the two choruses reveal themselves to the listener.

Good King Wenceslas (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - McKenzie, Jock

This popular Christmas carol tells the story of a Bohemian King who braved harsh winter weather to give alms to a poor peasant. In 1853 the English hymn writer John Mason Neale wrote his own version of this tale, setting his words to the melody of a 13th century spring carol "Tempus adest floridum" which had first been published in Piae Cantiones (1582). General Series 2158-2161 (August 2016)

2158This piece was written, at the request of Staff Bandmaster Ken Waterworth, for the Melbourne Staff Band. Based on the hymn tune 'Luckington', this music is a paean of praise to the Lord of all creation. The choice of tune was made because of the words of the opening line of the verse, 'Let all the world in every corner sing: My God and King!'2159An exciting collection of well-known Christmas carols, originally written as a concert opener2160This march refers to a number of Christmas carols starting with a few bars of Hark! The herald angels sing followed by fragments of Joy to the world! Before James R. Murray's Den himmelske lovsang is presented in full.2161Although the title derives from the United States of America's much-neglected motto, the music is a journey through to total trust in God. The tunes featured are 'In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust' leading to 'Trust in God'. Increasingly calm music leads to the more recent song 'In Christ alone, I place my trust'. The music ends with a brief reference to 'In Thee, O Lord, do I put my trust' now in a mood of calm assurance.

    Gaudete - Christopher Bond

For Soprano Cornet & Brass Band, Commissioned by & Written for Steve Stewart & Cory BandGaudete is a sacred Christmas carol, which is thought to have been composed in the 16th century, but could easily have existed as a monophonic hymn in the late medieval period. Within the lyrics, there are references to Christ, Virgin Mary, Grace, Ezekiel and Salvation. This arrangement takes the striking tune and re-works it for Soprano Cornet and band, transforming the melody in places, whilst also keeping that familiar tune in its original form. Gaudete was recorded by Steve Stewart & Cory Band in 2016, featuring on its album 'A Festival of Fanfares & Carols'.
