The title of this march, published in 1962, refers to the pin originally given to the mothers, but now also the fathers, of cadets entering The Salvation Army's Schools for Officer Training.It includes the song, 'Mothers of the Silver Star' (words by Arch. R Wiggins, music by George Marshall) which was specially written for the first occasion at which Silver Stars were presented. Also included is a Salvation Army flag song, 'Yellow star, and red and blue' also written by the aforementioned Wiggins and Marshall.

Originally entitled Rumba, the Cuban Overture was a was written some time following a two-week holiday which Gershwin took in Havana in February 1932. The overture is dominated by Caribbean rhythms and Cuban native percussion, with a wide spectrum of instrumental colour and technique. It is a rich and exciting work with complexity and sophistication, illustrating the influence of Cuban music and dance. Although it received it's premiere under the title Rumba, it was renamed Cuban Overture three months later at a benefit concert conducted by Gershwin at the Metropolitan Opera to avoid giving audience the idea that it was simply a novelty item. Black and White Rag is a 1908 ragtime composition by George Botsford. It was made famous by pianist Winifred Atwell and it helped her to establish an international profile. It was also used as the theme tune to the BBC snooker series 'Pot Black'.

This march was the second of Marshall's marches to be published and contained the note 'Revised by the Editor', who at the time was Lt. Colonel Richard Slater. Marshall maintained correspondence with the Colonel as his composing skills developed although this early work already demonstrates melodic charm and effective scoring.

Spirit Of Praise (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Marshall, George
The trio section of this march closely follows the vocal score of a setting of the hymn Praise my soul, the king of heaven by A. P. Berggren of Denmark. This hymn-like style, especially in the trio section, was not uncommon in Salvation Army marches of the period, intentionally devotional and a contrast to the lively nature which surrounded it.
