£33.09Men of Harlech (Brass Band) Welsh Traditional arr. Alex McGee
This contemporary take by Alex McGee on the Welsh folk song Men of Harlech will be an entertaining addition to concert programmes. The arranger writes: 'Men of Harlech is perhaps one of the most well known of all traditional Welsh folk songs, but not like this. This setting was inspired by a composer who I first encountered as a 14-year-old playing in his first regional brass band, Gareth Wood. Upon learning of the death of Gareth I felt compelled to honour his memory and his music in composition. I struck upon the idea to do what he had done to the tune Sosban Fach to Men of Harlech, to take the tune as the raw material and try to craft it into something new yet recognisable, modern yet accessible. The work attempts to highlight what for me are the underlying characteristics of we Welsh; prone to melancholy but quick to find joy, contradictory, inviting, welcoming and warm but capable of housing a fierce streak of nationalistic pride. I dedicate this work to Gareth Wood and thank him for his music.' All Your Anxiety is a reflective and expressive work for brass band inspired by Edward Joy's sacred song of the same name. Drawing deeply from the hymn's text and message, the piece explores the tension between human unease and the promise of peace found in faith. The work opens with a distinctive eighth-note figure in the euphonium that immediately establishes an unsettled character. Wide intervallic leaps and atypical slur groupings evoke a sense of fragility and uncertainty, musically portraying the weight of sorrow and care described in the opening verse of the hymn. This motivic material becomes the foundation of the entire arrangement, reappearing in varied forms as counter-melody, accompaniment, and featured solo lines across the ensemble. As the piece unfolds, the music gradually broadens and warms, reflecting the invitation of the text to "come to the cross" and leave one's burdens behind. Moments of lyricism and calm contrast with the earlier unease, leading toward a more settled and hopeful conclusion that mirrors the refrain's assurance: "Never a burden He cannot bear, never a friend like Jesus." £33.09Bagatelle No.25 in A Minor - Fur Elise (Brass Band) Beethoven arr. Olaf Ritman
Perhaps the most well-known piano piece by Ludwig van Beethoven, Bagatelle No. 25 in A Minor (written around 1810) is better known under its subtitle 'Fur Elise'. Even to this day it is still unknown who Elise was, with at least four theories claiming to tell the story. It might have been one of Beethoven's students or Therese Malfatti, a young lady who got much attention from him. The theory is that Beethoven's autograph Ludwig Nohl could not decipher his handwriting and might have read Elise instead of Therese. Nevertheless the piece has become extremely popular over the last two centuries and is often the very first real classical piece a beginner pianist goes to. Many classical pieces have been transcribed in contemporary fashion for brass bands in recent times, with Toccata in D Minor by J.S. Bach arranged by Ray Farr being the most popular and more recently Vivaldi's first part of Winter from The Four Seasons arranged by Philip Harper. This arrangement of Fur Elise fits in this series perfectly and seeks to bring a smile to its listeners. The last two bars are a direct tribute to Ray Farr's aforementioned arrangement of Toccata. The Coronation March by the German composer Giacomo Meyerbeer comes from Act 4, Scene 2 of his grand opera, Le Prophete (The Prophet). Set in the 16th century, it is based on the life of John of Leiden, Anabaptist leader and "King of Munster", with the libretto influenced by the works of Voltaire. The 5-act opera deals with love, revenge and tragedy. It was premiered by the Paris Opera at the Salle Le Peletier on 16 April 1849, with audience members including Chopin, Verdi, Delacroix, Charles Dickens and Berlioz.During his life, Meyerbeer was a dominant figure in the world of opera, with Hector Berlioz saying of him 'he has not only the luck to be talented, but the talent to be lucky.' This delightful German lullaby-carol first appeared in print in Samuel Scheidt's Tablaturbuch of 1650, though it may have been written before then, either by Scheidt himself or by an unknown author. J. S. Bach's version (in the form of a melody and figured bass) was included in Schemelli's Gesangbuch of 1736, and it is that which this arrangement for brass band by Andrew Wainwright is based on.
