£80.88'Odyssey' Variations (Brass Band) Kevin Norbury
'Odyssey' Variations was composed as a result of a commission in May 2020 from Five Lakes Silver Band and its musical director, Christopher Ward. This music is based on an original theme that I first used in an earlier composition, Odyssey, which was the test piece for the European Brass Band Championships, held at Munich, Germany, in April 1999. I distinctly remember getting into my hotel room and turning on the television to be greeted by news coverage of the Columbine High School shooting, so that piece has always held some significance for me, though because of a very sad coincidence. The melody was originally a cornet solo in the central slow section of Odyssey and pitched deliberately to test the soloist. I have, more recently attempted a straightforward choral setting of the melody, and the harmonies I use in the three chorale-style settings at the start of these variations are loosely based on that setting. The melody is a setting of the familiar words of Be Thou My Vision, an old Irish hymn, translated by Mary E. Byrne, and versified by Eleanor H. Hull. Beaufort Fanfare, by German composer Friedrich Gattermann, is a dynamic and vibrant musical work inspired by the Beaufort scale, a system for estimating wind speeds. Originally composed for brass ensemble and percussion, it was created to showcase Orchestral Tools' Beaufort Brass sample library, recorded at the iconic AIR Studios in London. VIEW SCORE PDF Cornish Fantasy was written for Kidlington Concert Brass's euphonium soloist Benjamin Abbott to perform in their Autumn 2021 series of concerts and contests. Based around a series of Cornish folk tunes, it pays tribute to Ben's Cornish roots, and in particular to his banding education with the Camborne Town Band. The solo opens with the 'unofficial Cornish anthem' Trelawny, which is followed with a series of virtuoso cadenzas. After these is an up-tempo jig in several segments, containing the traditional tunes Camborne Hill, Pendeen Jig, Newlyn Jig, Pencarrow, and Off She Goes, the latter two at a breakneck pace that carries through to a triumphant close. This arrangement draws from a rich heritage, blending secular and sacred traditions. The melody, famously attributed to Colonel R. Mellish (1777-1817), is inspired by the classic 17th-century poem by Ben Johnson. Within The Salvation Army tradition, this beloved tune is paired with the sacred lyrics of William Drake Pennick, "There is a holy hill of God, its heights by faith I see" (The Salvation Army Song Book, No. 627), making it a versatile choice for both concert and worship settings. Fallen Souls was the winner of Grimethorpe Colliery Band's 1st Annual Composition Competition in 2023. This depictive and impactful work explores the theme of human fallibility. The piece begins with a slow, yearnful introduction that depicts a fall from grace, represented by a horn solo that reflects the innate goodness of humanity. However, the music soon becomes more agitated and dissonant as it represents the temptations that can lead us astray. The opening reaches a climax of chaos and despair, as we are shown the devastating consequences of our choices. The following section depicts the temptations of humanity. The music is chaotic and seductive in this section, with regular time changes and rhythmic instability, representing the many temptations that surround us. The section ends with a sense of uncertainty, as we are left wondering whether we will succumb to these temptations. There is a reprise of the opening horn solo, and a return to the notion of human fallibility, but this time in extended form. Again there is a build toward chaos, and the music becomes more complex and textured, reflecting the complexity of the human journey. The work ends somewhat abruptly with a blaze, leaving the listener with a sense of both hope and uncertainty. VIEW SCORE PDF Gobsmacked was commissioned by Ravnanger Brass Band (Norway). The composer Robbert Vos writes: 'Gobsmacked is composed as an opening or encore piece which, as the title already reveals, is meant to surprise or overwhelm the audience! After a brief opening fanfare, the main theme is introduced by the solo cornet and euphonium. An accelerando leads to a quick movement, where this main theme is transformed into a con brio. In this section there's a lot of energy to be unleashed and every band member plays a roll in creating that. Throughout the piece there are many surprises, for example some unexpected time changes, percussion effects to wake you and some trombone glissandi to make you smile. After a short and atmospheric reminiscence by the flugel to the solos from the beginning of the piece, there comes a brief percussion interruption which leads to a reprise of the con brio, but this time in slightly different form. This all comes together in the finale where a big accelerando will lead to an exciting close.' It is an extension of that work and still dedicated to Ken Bradley, designed to provide a reflection of his technical skills and a platform to emulate musicianship for which he was renowned. Love Eternal was written by Gavin Lamplough for Neil Blessett, who at the time of writing was the Principal Horn player of both Birmingham (UK) Citadel Band and the International Staff Band of The Salvation Army. After popular demand, it was set as a cornet or flugel horn solo, both with piano accompaniment and this version with brass band. The arranger uses Jarod Cooper's popular contemporary worship song King of Kings, Majesty as the basis for the work and the piece seeks to provide a vehicle for the rich timbres of the tenor horn to be enjoyed by the listener. The music reflects the Christian musician's desire to offer their talents to God to be used by Him, and the lyrics of the song are ones of contrast as the musical journey of this piece seeks to emulate the juxtaposition through contrasting moods.
