Summit is a powerful descriptive work, lifting from broad beginnings to an exciting climax. It was written for the Hyde Street Youth Band in Melbourne's west, for the 2023 Australian National Band Championships. The piece was designed to give the band a chance to display their credentials. It will be an ideal choice for youth bands and above for both concert and contest programmes. £73.40Blaenwern Diversions (Brass Band) Karl Whelan
Commissioned by Micah Dominic Parsons, Blaenwern Diversions is based on the well loved hymn, Love Divine. The composer writes: 'Originally intended to be a set of variations, I found myself wandering around the notes of the hymn tune at the piano and found that the variations almost took on a life of their own resulting in what we have here - diversions. There are 8 diversions in total; the introductory diversion; diversions 1 - 6; and the finale which are divided into three linked movements. Blaenwern Diversions represents my entry into the world of contest works, so even though the piece aims to test the band, it is important that the band enjoy the music within no matter how treacherous!' £33.02Miserere mei, Deus (Brass Band) Gregorio Allegri arr. Espen Haukas
Miserere mei, Deus was composed by the Italian composer Gregorio Allegri (1582-1652) during the 1630s for use in the Sistine Chapel during matins, as part of the exclusive Tenebrae service on Wednesday and Friday of the Holy Week. The Miserere is written for two choirs, one of five and one of four voices, and is generally accepted to be one of the finest examples of Renaissance polyphony to survive to the present day. Tutti choirs sing a simple version of the original Miserere chant; one voice then, spatially separated, sings an ornamented "commentary" on this. The comment-part is left out in this arrangement due to its meaning with text, though monotonous in tune. The introduction is added by the arranger to set the right atmosphere before the original chant is played. The brass choirs are meant to be placed opposite each other in a church or large hall. £33.02Eternity (Brass Band) Michael Bojesen arr. David Robb
In Eternity, Danish composer and conductor Michael Bojesen sets a text by the Danish poet Ellen Heiberg as a choral fantasy piece. In this effective arrangement by Scottish composer/arranger David Robb, after a simple, pure opening melody, lilting unison lines evoke the roll of the ocean's waves and the smoothness of the stone which represents a piece of "all eternity." Following the opening hymn, layered melodies overlap and circle each other, representing the cycle of time. Each melody repeats and builds until it dies away, and the band returns to unison to end on a single note. PDF download includes score and parts. This foot-tapping Latin-style cornet feature showcasing the front row was written by Barrie Gott for the Brisbane Excelsior Band. The composer writes: 'I had wanted to write something in this genre after the success of the third movement of the Jazz Suite. Entertainment numbers are always needed for park and popular concerts. It is important that the rhythm section maintains a consistent tempo. They can be featured also. The samba rhythm and feel should be maintained throughout. £33.02March - The Green Island (Brass Band) Espen Haukas
This march was written to mark the centennial jubilee of the renowed Manger Musikklag. The title for the piece comes from the many descriptions of the county Manger Musikklag originates from, on the island of Radoy. As the composer writes, 'It is a uniquely lush and beautiful landscape, which is echoed on the famously green trimmed jackets worn by the band at concerts and competitions. Radoy is not without reason called "the green island". With regards to the composition, I have not tried to reinvent the idea of a march. But rather to present my own take on its familiar style. The piece is meant to have a reassuring familiarity about it, whilst the ending will surely make the audience smile.'
