The Southern Cross is one of several excellent marches by Brian Bowen in which he carried on the more sophisticated pattern of British marches by Wilfred Heaton, Leslie Condon and Ray Steadman-Allen. It was written for the Box Hill (Australia) Corps jubilee celebrations in 1970 and formed part of the band's repertoire when it toured Great Britain in the same year. The first half of the march features part of the song, 'March on!' by Klaus Ostby, an early pioneer of Salvation Army music in Scandinavia. The contrapuntal layering of melodies in the trio, especially in the finale where 'March on!' sounds one more triumphant time, is notable, as is the shift to a slower, more stately tempo. The harmonic and rhythmic style also represents the more modern sounds of Salvation Army brass band music in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Right from the opening gestures, listeners at early performances knew that a page had turned in the evolution of the Salvation Army march.

Its importance in the annual calendar to the players, supporters and spectators is vital to the Tameside and Saddleworth community. However, this mighty contest simply could not take place without the willing volunteers who dedicate their services year after year to keep this unique banding tradition going.Traditionally, on Whit Friday Morning, Hail! Smiling Morn (Roud #1346), also known as Praise Ye the Lord, is heard across the Saddleworth villages. This is where I have taken my inspiration, and the entire march is built upon quotes and references of this joyous work.The Stewards has many traditional elements drawing on the vast repertory of well-known marches, as well as some untraditional techniques and harmonies. St Julien is a town near the French/Belgian border which witnessed several battles during WW1. The composer Arthur W. Hughes (1870-1950) was born in Kingston, Ontario, and left home when he was quite young to perform with circus bands in US. He wrote several marches and a few other compositions but this one, dating from 1918, is the most well-known. The march also works as a fast circus march. Here it has been expertly arranged for brass band by Dr. Keith M. Wilkinson. FAITH IS THE VICTORY (Brass Band Set) - James Curnow
James Curnow wrote this march while completing his Masters degree at Michigan State University and unsurprisingly reflects the great tradition of American symphonic wind band marches. Curnow embraces the sound world of the great Mid-Western universities (Michigan, Illinois, Iowa and Ohio State) and the march styles of Eric Osterling and Clifton Williams. Several changes of tempo indicate that this is anything but an ordinary street march. The wonderful changes of key are also notable and propel the music towards an exciting finish.

£33.62March - Helping Hands (Rob Bushnell) Brass Band
Helping Hands was written for the British Bandsman March Composition Contest, entered into category 2 (marches for 3rd/4th section bands). The piece is loosely programmatic in nature: The introductio is fanfare-like, announcing the date of the next Whit Friday Contests and the bands' anticipation of and preparation for the event. The first section is the march of the volunteers, as they descend upon the many venues, ready to run the contests. The second section (bars 35 to 52) sees the contests start. The bands strike up, march, finish and go from place to place, whilst the volunteers manage them, the audiences, and all manner of issues and problems thrown at them. The third section (bars 53 to 69) represents the bad weather which has, at times, presented itself on that particular Friday. But everyone carries on (possibly the sun comes out) and we enjoy the day. The trio uses the hymn St. Vincent by Sigismund Neukomm: St. Vincent de Paul is the patron saint of charities and volunteering, hence its use here. The piece is influenced by marches that are commonly heard during the Whit Friday March Contests, using motifs, rhythms and harmonic progressions (sparingly) throughout the piece. March-card sized parts included, with alternatives for horns in F and lower brass in bass clef. COMPOSER: Neil LockThis march was submitted to the march composers' competition for "Bandamonium 3"in Hatherleigh, Devon in July 2024. The winning march was played by massed bands at the conclusion of the celebrations on Saturday 27th July 2024. Unfortunately, this march took second place in the competition, behind the march of Paul Pennicotte-Henrie, conductor of Okehampton Silver Band.The march can be played with or without the singing. (Even at the Whit Friday marches, begad!) I suggest that it should be introduced by 3-beat rolls.When played with singing, the "Bandamonium" lyrics (bars 10-13 and 56-57) are to be sung by all players, keeping to their own parts, with appropriate octave adjustment for their individual singing voices. Conductor and percussionists should sing with the main theme (Db and C at bars 10-13, F at 56-57). Listen to the 3rd cornet players!There is an additional part for Singers, in which the trio melody (bars 58 onwards) can be sung by Soprano and Tenor singers at a moderate choir standard. An octave-down option is also provided in the higher bars. This part can be given to "spare" singers within the band, or to singers external to the band if opportunity permits. CHALK FARM No.2 (Brass Band Set) - Edward Gregson
In 1909, The Salvation Army published a march called 'Chalk Farm'. 'Chalk Farm No. 2' was written to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Bandmaster Punchard, Bandmaster to Chalk Farm band for 50 years. The tune 'March on, we shall win the day' is common to both marches. The later march is symphonic rather than processional, including as it does irregular bars of 5 and 7 beats.

INDOMITABLE (Brass Band Set) - Herbert Mountain
Herbert Mountain saw 15 marches published by The Salvation Army between 1922 and 1959. Favourites among these include tributes to several 'Citadel' corps like Sheffield, Blackpool and Stockport, and Indomitable dating from 1951. Beginning in the minor and unfolding in contest march style as a cornet soloist dialogues with the full band, the march switches to the major to present the chorus from 'Onward, Christian Soldiers'.
