COMPOSER: Neil LockThis march was submitted to the march composers' competition for "Bandamonium 3"in Hatherleigh, Devon in July 2024. The winning march was played by massed bands at the conclusion of the celebrations on Saturday 27th July 2024. Unfortunately, this march took second place in the competition, behind the march of Paul Pennicotte-Henrie, conductor of Okehampton Silver Band.The march can be played with or without the singing. (Even at the Whit Friday marches, begad!) I suggest that it should be introduced by 3-beat rolls.When played with singing, the "Bandamonium" lyrics (bars 10-13 and 56-57) are to be sung by all players, keeping to their own parts, with appropriate octave adjustment for their individual singing voices. Conductor and percussionists should sing with the main theme (Db and C at bars 10-13, F at 56-57). Listen to the 3rd cornet players!There is an additional part for Singers, in which the trio melody (bars 58 onwards) can be sung by Soprano and Tenor singers at a moderate choir standard. An octave-down option is also provided in the higher bars. This part can be given to "spare" singers within the band, or to singers external to the band if opportunity permits. The Melbourne Staff Band celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2015 and this work was commissioned by Staff Bandmaster Ken Waterworth to feature in their programmes throughout the year.The music opens with fiery rhythmic figures, drawing on the band's technical brilliance. As the music progresses there are hits of traditional marches from early years, both in form and the minor key harmony used.The Trio section features The Homeward Trail, a song from the pen of Colonel Arthur Arnott, a Salvation Army officer who spent the majority of his career serving in Australia. The tune is then developed thematically and, following an interlude and key change, receives another treatment filled with fanfare and flourish that leads into the concluding moments of the work.Just prior to the closing bars, the music pays a brief homage to Australian composer Arthur Gullidge with a quote from his classic march Liberty, published in 1948, as a final salute to the great music that has come from this country.

Citadel's Destiny is a march that can be performed either in concert or on parade. It was commissioned by the Musique de l'Infanterie de Lille. A special feature is that it adheres to the conventional codes of military marches, albeit with a modern twist. The title refers to the citadel built by Vauban in Lille, "The Queen of Citadels", with which the band shares a destiny. This march is still performed by the Infantry Band as part of their traditional concert repertoire. Duration: 4.15

Marcho Brioso was commissioned by The Brioso Brass, a British-style brass band from Hokkaido, Japan. They gave the first performance in January 2012.The commission was for a bright and breezy march that the band could use as their theme tune, so Marcho Brioso falls into the composer's series of Broadway-style marches, which includes Slipstream, The Bandwagon and Jubiloso. After a short introduction a solo cornet plays the main theme, accompanied by a euphonium counter-melody. A secondary phrase from the horns and baritones leads to a tutti version of the main theme which is followed by the traditional 'bass' strain. A change of key heralds the trio section, which features a cantabile melody on euphonium; this is then taken up by the full band after a short bridge passage and further change of key. This takes us back to the home key which sees a quiet staccato version of the main theme lead to a recapitulation and a short coda which brings the march to a close.Duration: 3:45

Herbert Mountain saw 15 marches published by The Salvation Army between 1922 and 1959. Favourites among these include tributes to several 'Citadel' corps like Sheffield, Blackpool and Stockport, and Indomitable dating from 1951. Beginning in the minor and unfolding in contest march style as a cornet soloist dialogues with the full band, the march switches to the major to present the chorus from 'Onward, Christian Soldiers'.
