538: For Christ alone (Morgan Juel Stavik)This gentle and delicate march takes its title from the chorus of Fred Fry's song (S.A.S.B. 960).539: Calling Today! (Noel Jones)The words for this three-verse arrangement were written by Fanny Crosby, with music composed by George Cole Stebbins. While the song doesn't feature in the current Salvation Army Song Book, it was included in both the 1955 and 1986 editions. This arrangement was prepared during the pandemic, where people were encouraged to make contact by telephone as much as possible, and certainly welcomed phone calls from so many friends. Thinking of the calls, led to the words of this song.540: When the saints go marching in (Thomas Mack)This arrangement was written for the service celebrating the life of Irma Long at the request of her daughter. Irma, a gentle and kind woman, was a soldier for 70 years, 40 of which were at Corry Corps, Pennsylvania, USA, where she was also a songster, a pre-school Sunday School teacher, and corps treasurer. She drove the country roads from her village to Corry five times a week, even during the hard snow and ice of winters, so that she and her three daughters could attend corps activities. 541: There is sunshine (Wilfried Weiland)This work introduces a new composer to our band journals. Wilfried Weiland was the Band master at Berlin Central Corps and a member of the German Staff Band for several years. Although this is Wilfried's first published contribution with The Salvation Army, he has had several brass pieces published in the United Kingdom and abroad. The arrangement was originally written in July 2022 for the 25th anniversary of the Naumburg Corps, Germany. The reggae genre, employed here, has not been featured within our journals before but suits the style of a brass band well.

Silent Night and Away in a Manger; two of the most beautiful traditional Christmas carols are combined in this striking new slow jazz arrangement, to provide a subtle yet effective addition to Christmas programming. ABOUT THIS PIECE: 'God Put a Smile Upon Your Face' was written by all members of the band Coldplay for their second studio album 'A Rush of Blood to the Head'. Coldplay vocalist Chris Martin said: "The song came out of playing live and wanting to have something with a bit more bounce". The chart was originally released in 2003 to critical acclaim. In 2007 Mark Ronson covered the song on his album 'Version' - it is this version this arrangement is based upon. The following arrangement was devised as a concert opener - written as such to allow different sections of the band to make their way to the stage one at a time. The suggested stage entry directions for this arrangement are: Percussion > Basses > Trombones > Horns & Baritones > Cornets & Euphonium. DescriptionThis arrangement of Corelli's famous "Christmas Concerto" features soprano cornet, two solo cornets and solo euphonium. Arcangelo Corelli was one of the first masters of the baroque period, a skilled violinist much admired by fellow composers like Bach and Handel. He was born in Fusignano, near Ferrara in Northern Italy in 1653. He studied in nearby Bologna where he became an extremely competent violinist. By the 1670s he was working in Rome and building a reputation as a composer at the important and powerful Papal court. By the late 1600s he was widely famous all over Europe, regularly invited to important courts and palaces. Although he had a huge influence on the virtuoso writing of later composers, his writing for string instruments was designed to be playable by average, often amateur players.His set of Concerti Grossi known as Opus 6 was not published in his lifetime. We think they were written around 1690, and they were first published in Amsterdam in 1714, a year after Corelli's death. A 'Concerto Grosso' is a concerto for a group of soloists (the "concertino" group) accompanied by an ensemble (the "ripieno" group) and was an important form in the Baroque era. Handel's very successful examples were modelled on Corelli's example. Number 8 from the Opus 6 set was commissioned by the Venetian Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni and bears the inscriptionFatto per la notte di Natale('made for the night of Christmas'). It was used as part of the soundtrack for the 2003 film 'Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World".Performance Notes.In this arrangement the 'Concertino' group are the soprano cornet, solo cornets 1 & 2 and the solo euphonium. If logistics allow they should stand either at the front of or some distance away from the band. There is no percussion in this arrangement. In 1966 The Beatles released a single, which included the song Eleanor Rigby. Now an all time, international favourite from the group, this evocative song, with its magical string accompaniment (provided by their producer and arranger, Sir George Martin) has been embraced by numerous artistes and genres.In this artful arrangement for brass band, Tim Paton has successfully transcribed that original sound and created a wonderful concert item.Roger Thorne commented:"I have recently purchased Tim's arrangement of this classic Beatles number and would definitely recommend it.
