For Those in Peril on the Sea

NEW FOR JUNE 2021For Those in Peril on the Sea is a British hymn also entilted Eternal Father, Strong to Save. It is commonly associated with martitime armed services and seafarers. It was written in 1860 by William Whiting, an Anglican churchman from Winchester, who was inspired by Psalm 107, which is a thanksgiving song to God and describes the dangers of the sea. He was brought up near the coast and at the age of 35, was nearly killed when the ship he was aboard nearly sank in a terrible storm, but he was spared. Both the British Royal Navy and the US Navy made the song popular by adopting it in the later part of the 19th century. It has also been adapted by such services as the British Army, Royal Marines and the US Coast Guard. As well as being titled For Those In Peril On The Sea which is taken from the last line of the first verse, it is also known as The Navy Hymn, Royal Navy Hymn, Hymn of Her Majesty's Armed Forces, and the United States Navy Hymn. It was regularly sung on board a whole manner of ships during services on voyages. The hymn appears in many hymnals, on TV programmes and is often sung at funerals where the deceased has served in the Navy, most notably at the funeral of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in April 2021.

Rhapsody in Brass - Dean Goffin

Rhapsody in Brass is in three movements and was written for the British Open Championships in 1949, held at Belle Vue in Manchester. The contest winners were Fairey Aviation Works Band under the baton of Harry Mortimer. Eric Ball came second with Ransome & Marles and Stanley Boddington 3rd with Munn and Felton Band. Rhapsody in Brass had the unusual distinction of being written as a test piece by a Salvation Army composer. Eric Ball's Resurgam was the only other piece to achieve that dual personality in that era.Dean Goffin was born in 1916 in Wellington, New Zealand, son of Henry Goffin, a Salvation Army officer and composer. At 19 he was appointed Bandmaster of the Wellington South Band and when World War II started, he enlisted in the New Zealand Armed Forces where he became Bandmaster of the 20th Infantry Battalion and later the 4th Brigade Band. During the time he served with them in the Middle East and Europe, he composed and arranged numerous pieces among which Rhapsody in Brass and the march Bel Hamid, later adapted for Salvation Army use and renamed Anthem of the Free. After the war, Dean kept on composing and his work was featured by the Wellington South Band. Later he transferred to Timaru for another job and became Bandmaster there. He was studying music at the time and as he wanted to take part in a competition for devotional selections for Salvation Army use, he sent some of his compositions to the International Headquarters. When Rhapsody for Brass was chosen as the test-piece for the British Open Championships, people at the Salvation Army started asking questions about the lack of publications of his work. It was discovered that the pieces submitted for the competition didn't meet the exact criteria. Among these pieces was one of his most appealing works The Light of the World which was published a year later, in 1950, the same year as he completed his Bachelor of Music studies at Otagu University. After entering the Salvation Army Training College in Wellington with his wife, Marjorie, Dean was in 1956 appointed National Bandmaster in the British Territory. Later he became National Secretary for Bands and Songster Brigades and in this period he organised the yearly festival in the Royal Albert Hall and was responsible for the national music schools in the UK. Dean returned to his home country in 1966 and to mark the centenary of the Salvation Army in New Zealand he was knighted by the Queen in 1983. Sir Dean Goffin died on 23 January 1984.

Suite from Gloria - Karl Jenkins - Arranged & Edited Childs & Wainwright

"The Latin text of the Gloria is an ancient hymn of praise from the Christian tradition derived from the song of the angels who announce the birth of Jesus, as recorded in the Gospel according to St Luke. The Gloria has formed part of the Ordinary of the Mass for many centuries, and in that context has been set by many composers; there are also independent settings by Handel, Vivaldi and Poulenc. But the opportunity to work with such an iconic text also afforded me an opportunity to explore how other religions perceive the Divine. This is an ongoing feature of my work, from the multi-faceted The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, the Japanese haiku in my Requiem to the ancient Arabic text in my Stabat Mater.” Karl Jenkins, June 2010Originally scored for choir, orchestra and ethnic percussion, Karl Jenkins’ Gloria received its world premiere on November 7th 2010 at the Royal Albert Hall, and was recorded in the same year by the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Karl Jenkins. This version for brass band and percussion was arranged and edited by Andrew Wainwright and Robert Childs, and received its premiere on November 16th 2014 at The Sage Gateshead performed by the Grimethorpe Colliery Band conducted by Robert Childs. The work is in five movements: I. The Proclamation: Gloria in Excelsis DeoThe Proclamation begins with a rousing fanfare featuring antiphonal cornet choirs, before unison plainchant introduces melodic lines for solo cornet flugel horn and tutti band. The movement closes with a return to the fanfare style. II. Prayer: Laudamus tePrayer is typical of Karl Jenkins; serenely beautiful and lyrical in style. This movement features various soloists and works well in isolation. III. The Psalm: Tehellim - Psalm 150The Psalm is vibrant and high paced featuring ethnic style percussion. Virtuosic in nature the movement also makes use of the antiphonal cornet choirs.IV. The Song: I’ll Make MusicThe Song represents the ‘Golden Section’ of the suite and is presented here as a cornet solo. Like Prayer, this heavenly music is also effective as a stand alone concert item.V. The Exaltation: Domine Deus The Exaltation follows the same form as The Proclamation. With a lyrical middle section featuring solo horn, flugel and solo cornet, the start and finish make use once again of brilliant antiphonal cornet choirs.Suite from Gloria can be heard on 'Grimethorpe Entertain' CD available to buy here.

Romanza from Euphonium Concerto - Karl Jenkins

Romanza is taken from Karl Jenkins' Euphonium Concerto, an extended work given its world premiere by euphonium soloist David Childs and the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Owain Arwel Hughes in St. David's Hall, Cardiff during the last night of the 2009 Welsh Proms.Romanza, which would normally form the second movement of the concerto, is reminiscent of Jenkin's Benedictus from The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace. It is simple music, one might almost say innocent and naive, celebrating conjuct melodic shapes with light harmonic accompaniment in the spirit of a tranquil folk-meditation.On his eagerness to compose the work for David, Karl Jenkins stated, "It's been a privilege to write for such a virtuoso performer. We had been talking about it for some time and happily it all came together in 2009. David is a wonderful musician of the highest quality and it was a joy and, indeed, a challenge, to write a work for both him and an instrument of such beauty and agility."Romanza for euphonium and brass band recieved its premiere on November 29th 2009 in Swansea's Brangwyn Hall performed by David Childs and the Cory Band conducted by Dr. Robert Childs, and can be heard on Doyen CD262 Moto Perpetuo.Other individual movements and the complete Concerto for Euphonium with brass band accompniament are available from Prima Vista Musikk. Orchestral and wind band versions are available from Boosey and Hawkes.
