Commissioned by the Greater Manchester Hub Youth Brass Band for their 2014 season, Starburst is a high-octane work in a contemporary style with elements of rock and funk fusion. The piece features soloistic input from all sections, with vibrant percussion colours adding to the overall effectiveness. Although the piece sounds extremely virtuosic it is accessible for most bands, and is fun to rehearse as well as exciting to listen to. VIEW SCORE PDF Greg Jasperse's choral setting of the much-loved hymn Abide with me has become very popular with choirs and has here been arranged for brass band by Norwegian composer Espen Haukas. The scoring is for standard brass band although the Repiano Cornet part is set as a second Flugel part. Optional cues are written for some upper register notes meaning the piece is playable by bands of all levels. £59.33Avifauna (Brass Band) Joshua Tyler Jameson
This highly descriptive work was commissioned by the National Youth Brass Band of America and will be a terrific concert or entertainment contest item. The music paints the picture of the lives of a variety of different birds. The composer writes: 'When I began thinking about this project I was sitting in my office in the early morning, the sun having just risen. There was a gentle breeze and the only thing that I could hear (aside from my hungry whining cats) was the gentle song of the birds outside my open window. As much of my work is programmatic, almost like symphonic poems, this immediately gave me the image of a majestic sunrise with all types of birds fluttering about, almost as if out of an episode of Planet Earth. When I was commissioned by the National Youth Brass Band of America, I knew the project had to be something the ensemble could grab onto. Something they could see. Something they could relate to. There being so many types of birds in North America, I selected a handful to help tell my story... The scene where I came up with this idea seemed to be the perfect starting point. Sunrise, tiny chirps of Morning Birds floating around the twilight of dawn, swiftly moving towards the majesty of the sun cresting the horizon. A new day, the beginning of a story. As the sun rises higher in the sky, animal activity stirs, becoming lively and wild. The flowers have opened up to drink in the sun's rays, leaving them open to nectar-seeking Hummingbirds. Whizzing by at lightning speed, the hummingbirds journey from flower to flower, drinking their fill until the sun begins to set back over the horizon. When daylight fades, the enigmatic Owl floats silently through the sky. The wonder of these creatures comes not just from their beauty, but also from their mystery and their ferocity. We see images in pop culture of majestic white owls and marvel in their beauty... but to a mouse roaming the forest floor in the dark of the night, the terror of suddenly being dropped upon by a silent predator is anything but peaceful. In the dead of night, soft rolling clouds thicken as a storm begins to brew. With the ensuing rain also emerges the grotesque scavenging Vulture; marching along from carcass to carcass, tearing into the rotting leftovers of another predator's kill, gorging themselves until over-full. However, from this nightmare fuel of a bird, a new day awaits... As the dawn of another day approaches, you begin to hear the same morning birds you heard the previous day. When the light finally breaks the horizon, the soaring majesty of the Eagle drives us to the end of our story; an exciting journey told through the eyes of the winged creatures that paint the skies of North America. Beaufort Fanfare, by German composer Friedrich Gattermann, is a dynamic and vibrant musical work inspired by the Beaufort scale, a system for estimating wind speeds. Originally composed for brass ensemble and percussion, it was created to showcase Orchestral Tools' Beaufort Brass sample library, recorded at the iconic AIR Studios in London. Here it has been set for brass band. A central element of Beaufort Fanfare is its exploration of musical density. The piece begins with a single motif and gradually builds in complexity and richness, reflecting the increasing strength of the wind. As it progresses, the music intensifies, with the development of density playing a crucial role in conveying the evolving character of the elements. Through intricate brass harmonies and rhythmic drive, Beaufort Fanfare captures both the awe-inspiring beauty and raw power of nature. More than just an auditory experience, this composition takes the listener on a journey through the elements, celebrating the force of wind in all its forms. £59.33Caprice (Euphonium Solo with Brass Band) Andrew Batterham
VIEW SCORE PDF Caprice was written for Matthew van Emmerik, to showcase his virtuosity in an engaging piece of concert music. The work is in theme and variation form, with the primary material being the theme from the last of Paganini's Ventiquattro Capricci per violino solo, a collection of 24 caprices for solo violin. This theme has been the inspiration for similar works by many composers since it was first published, including Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninov, Benny Goodman and Andrew Lloyd Webber. In this work, the famous theme is treated to a more contemporary approach. The first variation, Capricious, relies on motor rhythms and jagged dialogues between the soloist and the band. It is couched in an organic scale reminiscent of the Phrygian mode. The second variation, Sad, is in direct contrast, acting as a traditional ballad and allowing the soloist to explore the expressive side of the instrument. The third variation, Energetic, is a micro set of variations in itself, designed to display the soloist's innovative technique and stamina. Each section is more challenging than the last, until the work concludes with a whirlwind dance at breakneck speed. Like all of Batterham's recent work, the musical language of Caprice draws upon classical, jazz, funk and ska elements to create a unique sound where anything can happen, and probably will. This arrangement was made possible through Matt's instigation and generosity. £85.29Chorale Tangents (Brass Band) Kenneth Downie
VIEW SCORE PDF This magnificent work by Kenneth Downie was commissioned by Festival Brass Band of Belgium, and its conductor Manu Mellaerts. It was first performed by the band on 10th October 2010, in Mechelen, a beautiful old city in the province of Antwerp. The composer writes: 'The chorale in the title is the famous one associated with the words 'Now thank we all our God', dating from 17th century Germany. The words were written by Martin Rinkart and the music by Johann Cruger. The use of the word 'tangents' in the title can best be understood as variations. This is another set of variations, in the line of St. Magnus, Princethorpe and Purcell Variations. I still cannot resist the urge to present familiar material in an unfamiliar way! Hopefully, the listener can relate to these tangents, and experience some of the joy that I receive when writing them.' VIEW SCORE PDF The Coventry Carol is an English Christmas carol dating from the 16th century. The carol was traditionally performed in Coventry as part of a mystery play called The Pageant of the Shear Men and Tailors. The play depicts the Christmas story from chapter two in the Gospel of Matthew: the carol itself refers to the Massacre of the Innocents, in which Herod ordered all male infants under the age of two in Bethlehem to be killed, and takes the form of a lullaby sung by mothers of the doomed children. Stephen Tighe has here given this well loved tune an update to allow it to appeal to a broad audience. VIEW SCORE PDF This trumpet solo was written by Nick Simmons-Smith at the request of Dallas Brass Band for a Christmas concert featuring Elmer Churampi, international trumpet soloist. The solo features three Christmas songs: i. Mi Burrito Sabanero voy camino de Belen (With my donkey of the Savannah, I'm going to Bethlehem) ii. Noche de paz (Silent night) iii. Campana Sobre Campana (Bell above bells, O bells of Bethlehem) These songs are all very popular in Central and South America - including Peru, where Elmer Churampi is originally from. In Eternity, Danish composer and conductor Michael Bojesen sets a text by the Danish poet Ellen Heiberg as a choral fantasy piece. In this effective arrangement by Scottish composer/arranger David Robb, after a simple, pure opening melody, lilting unison lines evoke the roll of the ocean's waves and the smoothness of the stone which represents a piece of "all eternity." Following the opening hymn, layered melodies overlap and circle each other, representing the cycle of time. Each melody repeats and builds until it dies away, and the band returns to unison to end on a single note. PDF download includes score and parts.
