Air from the Suite in D - Johann Sebastian Bach

Johann Sebastian Bach’s Suite No. 3 in D, from a set of four such suites, was recreated from a set of autographed parts ?from around the 1730s, as no score has survived. The music is believed to date from some years prior to that and is possibly derived from an earlier work than that. The Air , perhaps the most famous movement from all the Suites, has been arranged as a tenor horn feature, although there is no part for cornets, bass trombone, euphoniums or percussion in this transcription. Capriol Suite - Phillip Littlemore

Peter Warlock, the pen name of Philip Heseltine, never settled into a conventional career. He had some short lived appointments, including one as a music critic for the Daily Mail, however he did get involved in editing, transcribing and arranging early music manuscripts, and writing a major study of the music of Delius. His first compositions, mainly songs, began to appear in 1917, at which time he had moved to Dublin to avoid possible conscription. It was at this time that he adopted the pseudonym Warlock. In 1922 he completed his first widely acknowledged masterpiece – the song-cycle the Curlew . His period of creativity continued only for a few years culminating in the composition of his most famous work, the Capriol Suite ?in 1925. The original piano duet version of the work was a great success and was quickly followed by the version for string orchestra, from which this arrangement is made. The Capriol Suite is a set of dances in the renaissance style, and is very loosely based on tunes found in Arbeau’s Orchestographie of 1588. The suite consists of six movements: Basse-Danse , is a lively dance for older folk followed by a stately Pavane ; a delicate, yet lively Tordion is followed by Bransles (pronounced ‘Brawl’, a fast country dance which works its way into a frenzy, continuously building in speed and excitement. This is followed by Pieds-en-l’air , perhaps the Suite’s most popular movement, with its beautifully serene lines before the final movement, Matachins , an exhilarating sword dance with its driving rhythm, culminating in violent dissonances bringing the piece to a spirited close. A Bournemouth Suite - Benjamin Tubb

Bournemouth Suite was written by Benjamin Tubb in 2005, when the composer was just 17 years of age. After spending many school holiday weeks with his grandparents in the coastal town of Bournmouth, it was obvious that these experiences would make a great basis for a composition. This testpiece is split into three separate movements: Balloon Ride, The Pier at Night and The BIC. Each movement has its own unique character, although there are ideas shared by all three throughout, one of which is the opening syncopation.Balloon RideThe First movement, Balloon Ride, describes a journey on "The Bournemouth Eye", a tethered hot air balloon that takes you up 500 feet. It's located in the middle of the town centre, which enables you to see surrounding countryside for up to 20 miles! The movement begins rather ominously as the balloon raises from the ground which leads into a more lively section caharacteresed by the repeating quavers in the lower brass and woodblock. The movement ends in much the same way as it started - signalling the return to terra firma. The Pier At NightDuring the summer there are several large firework displays in the town centre. The second movement, The Pier At Night descirbes an evening spent on the beach in deckchairs watching the montage of colours in the night-time sky. With demanding solos for horn and cornet, as well as exposed playing spread throughout the band, this slow movement will really test a band's expressive and lyrical playing. The 'BIC'The Bournemouth INternational Centre, also known as "The BIC" is one of Bournemouth's most visited attractions, and regularly hosts shows such as 'Riverdance' and pantomimes. Inside is a world of entertainment and the centre itself is just a stone's throw from both "The Bournemouth Eye" and the Pier. The 3rd movement has been written to describe the buzz of activity surrounding the BIC, and the entire works ends with the same syncopated motif from the beginning.A Bournemouth Suite was set as the 'set-test' at the Pontins Brass Band Championships 2009.

Petite Suite de Ballet - Eric Ball

This composition consists of four ‘miniatures’, simple in construction, yet not without technical demands upon the players. The music is for a ballet which so far exists only in the imagination! Like most ballet, it has a touch of the fantastic, and must be interpreted with a light, deft touch. The first movement, Parade, brings many characteristics on to the stage, marching perkily, leggily, with almost puppet-like movements. In the next movement, Pas Seul (Solo Dance), one lone figure holds the stage, with a mixture of grace and sauciness. At the end he (or she) runs off with a snap of the fingers. The third movement is a Minuet. A chosen few, richly garbed, perform this stately, courtly dance, while the rest of the company look on at some ritual in which they are not allowed to join. The final Ensemble commencing with the return of the lone figure, gradually brings the whole company to the stage. Various groups come forward for a few moments, and then rejoin the general pattern of the dancing. Towards the end a stately procession is formed, but this finally breaks up in a sudden flurry of leaping and capering, and in a moment, as though at some magic call, the dances have disappeared, whilst the sonorous tones of the final bars of music follow them with a rather disapproving air.Our little fantasy is over.
