Trumpeter's Lullaby - Leroy Anderson - Naohiro Iwai

Leroy Anderson is part of American cultural heritage and he is often compared to such masters as Gershwin and Copland. Trumpeter's Lullaby was written for The Boston Pops Orchestra of which he was the conductor. This new arrangement for brass band gives your three cornet soloists a chance to 'take to the fore' in a variety of up-tempo jazz styles. Once performed this item will become a favourite that you will use time and time again.

    Helvetia - Gareth Wood - -

I first went to Switzerland in the early 1970's and regularly played at the Lucerne Festival with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. It is a beautiful city, one of my favourite European cities. In writing Helvetia (the Roman name for Switzerland) I wanted to encapsulate the moods that remind me of this wonderful place. The work is in four distinct sections and is on the whole, self-explanatory.It opens with An Alpine Dawn and sunrise, the tubas and euphoniums substituting for the Swiss Alphorns. Next The Clock Shop at Mid-day, a loud ticking, chiming and the sad sound of a cuckoo, builds into the cacophony of the mid-day chimes. The third section is A Walk to Wagner's House. Just along the lake from the centre of town is Tribschen. This walk I have done many times, and it is here that Wagner wrote ‘Tristan'. I have quoted the Dresden Amen (written by J.G. Naumann) which is much used in Parsifal. The final section is The Cesta Run, the most famous bob-sleigh run in the world. As we take each corner, the feeling of speed is demonstrated as only a brass band can do!The work is dedicated to the Cory Band and also to the memory of James Watson, a great cornet player, trumpeter and conductor. It was he who got me into writing for brass band and I hope this piece is worthy.Gareth Wood (Feb. 2011)

Mexican Hat Dance - Traditional - Roger Webster

The widely acclaimed Mexican Hat Dance became so popular that at one point it was declared the national folk dance of Mexico. Its popularity is attributed to the great Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. After a visit to Mexico in 1930, she fell in love with the culture and spectacular costumes of the country, and decided to include the dance in her permanent repertoire. The ecstatic Mexican cultural authorities felt that such honour could only mean that the Hat Dance was indeed the most important dance in Mexico.Mexican Hat Dance was for many years inextricably linked to the charismatic trumpeter Rafael M?ndez, whose flamboyant soloistic style was the inspiration behind this arrangement, which is also available from Prima Vista Musikk with piano accompaniment.

    Gaudete

Music for Brass Band Duration: 3:00 Minutes Percussion: 5 Players (3 Optional)Tenor Drum, Bass Drum,Tambourine, Cymbals and Glockenspiel (Optional)All Rights Reserved Programme NotesGaudete (meaning ‘rejoice’) is a sacred Christmas Carol of Latin text. As a single line melody to carry the words, is it thought to have been written in the late medieval period, with subsequent harmonies being added in the fifteenth century. The song was published in 1582 in the collection ‘Piae Cantiones’ - a collection of Finnish / Swedish sacred songs. This carol follows the typical structure for sacred songs at the time of its publication – a uniform series of four-line stanzas each preceded by a two-line refrain. The Latin text is a medieval song of praise about the Virgin Mary. My arrangement, whilst being something of an ‘indulgence’ seeks to use some musical language typical of the time of the original publication.Jock McKenzieJock McKenzie studied trumpet at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester where he was a joint recipient of the college’s concerto prize.
