Elgar's Pomp & Circumstance March No. 1?was completed in July 1901 although the 'big tune' actually dates from earlier in that same year. It was premiered in Liverpool by its dedicatees, the Liverpool Orchestral Society, on the 19th October. It was repeated in London a few days later by Henry Wood at the Promenade concerts and the result was sensational, the audience roared its applause, and refused to allow the concert to continue. In order to restore order, Wood conducted the march three times - the only time in the history of the Promenade concerts that an orchestral item was accorded a double encore in Wood's lifetime. In 1973 the James Shepherd Versatile Brass was formed and Elgar Howarth was asked to write a piece for them to perform at a Royal Albert Hall Gala Concert, following the National Brass Band Championships. Connecting Jim's surname with the well-known saying, 'red sky at night, shepherd's delight', he found his title "Red Sky at Night". Duration: 4:00

Dedicated to his wife, Elgar sold the copyright of Salut d'Amour to a publisher for just over ?2, who changed the title into French, thereby hoping to sell more copies. It did sell, at once, and has remained very popular ever since. Recorded on Polyphonic QPRL070D Solo. Duration: 3:12.

Programme Notes from Andrew Duncan:Like many of the arrangements in the Flexi-Collection - Popular Classics Series I have simplified the rhythms and time signature, etc. I have also omitted trills for ease of playing.Dynamics form a very important aspect of this arrangement and it is important to observe these, especially the p markings. Every dynamic from p through to ff is used as well as some crescendos.The 1st Cornet/Trumpet part is perhaps more difficult than in some of the other arrangements in the series, but the other parts are fairly simple in comparison.The Percussion part (which is optional) is unusual in that it calls for two 'Anvils' to be played.
