In English-speaking countries 'Away in a Manger' is one of the first Christmas songs to be taught to little children. It is a moving song with simple words, which makes it easy to understand. The song is also known as 'Luther's Cradle Hymn'. This suggests that Martin Luther was the author of the lyrics. According to researchers, however, this is a misconception the author is unknown. In England 'Away in a Manger' is sung to a different melody than in the USA, for example. The 'English' melody was composed by W.J. Kirkpatrick. Andrew Mackereth made a touching arrangement of the 'English' melody, which suits the tender lyrics perfectly.

It is likely that the melody is more than 600 years old.Many famous composers have written their own harmonics and versions of the psalm. This arrangement isbased on two different harmonics; The first and third verse is based on the harmonics by Michael Praetorius while the second verse is based on the harmonics of Johann Sebastian Bach.

The carol is based on a folk chant called Shchedryk.The composer was a supporter of the independence movement in Ukraina, and was assassinated by a Soviet agent in 1921.The carol was made famous after the adaption by Peter J Wilhousky in 1936. Wilhousky worked as an arranger for the NBC symphony orchestra.It is also well known from popular culture, like the film Home Alone (1990), and a version by the vocal group Pentatonix.

Sunday in the Park was written for tenor horn virtuoso Sheona White, and commissioned by her partner, Matt Wade, as a Christmas present.Composer Philip Sparke had known and admired Sheona's playing for many years, having produced her first solo CD and written pieces for her previously.Both composer and performer are huge fans of the late Karen Carpenter, Sheona in part modelling her sound on the singer's sultry voice; so it was decided that this new solo would be a piece which, whilst not being a 'Carpenters' pastiche, paid tribute to their relaxed style and rich harmonic language. Sunday in the Park openswith an accompanied cadenza for the soloist, which leads to a gentle rhythmic melody with a laid-back feel. This is taken up by the band but the soloist sparks a change of mood by introducing a faster light rock interlude. This reaches a climax, at which point the music unwinds until the original mood returns.A variation on the original melody leads to a short cadenza from the soloist, which brings the work to a peaceful close.

With Sweet Jubilation - James Curnow
Explore different settings of the Medieval Latin carol "In Dulci Jubilo" via this solid arrangement by James Curnow. Opening with an exquisite "Brass Choir" section a la Michael Praetorius (1571-1621) and progressing through a "Woodwind Choir" section in the later J.S.Bach style, WITH SWEET JUBILATION is wonderful "style study" material. Halvdan Sivertsen (born 1950) is one of the most popular singer/ songwriters in Norway. He is well know as a first-class storyteller, and he has a strong melodic line in all his music. This Christmas song was first recorded in 1991 and it has become a Norwegian classic. The lyrics tell the story of a couple travelling through time to find a city with bright lights, where they hear people sing about the couple who are about to have their first baby. But still this couple can not find anybody willing to help them, and they are forced to go back 2000 years, to find the stable where they find some shelter. Maybe they should have travelled further ahead in time in the firstplace, to find people willing to open their door to the poor and needing?
