Elegy I - Jacob de Haan
Elegy I 'Jealousy' has been named after John Donne's poem of the same name. This English poet (1572-1631) wrote an entire series of elegies, each with its own theme. Jealousy can trigger various emotions, ranging from disappointment, grief, or regret, to madness and anger. All these emotions have been incorporated into this composition. Jacob de Haan was inspired by three different works of art: a poem (the aforementioned poem by John Donne), a painting by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch (Jealousy in the Garden) and an old French chanson about jealousy (Je ne l'ose dire) by the sixteenth-century French composer Pierre Certon. The music refers repeatedly to thischanson - sometimes through key notes from the melody that serve as the starting point for new, isolated themes and sometimes through quotations of the original version

Christmas Brass is a fantasy on six carols, originally commissioned by Mark Freeh for the Manhattan Brass Choir. Duration: 16:30The well-known tune, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, a hymn originally based on a plainsong melody, is here set in 5/4 meter. Modal harmonies are combined with big band style as the piece gains momentum, greatly accentuating the mood of the words, "Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel." The opening 5/4 statement of the theme returns, and the piece ends quietly.In Beautiful Savior (also known by the title Fairest Lord Jesus), a hushed beginning featuring horns, euphoniums, and a muted trumpet, leads through a key change to a satisfying, chorale-likeclosing passage.In Away in a Manger, Peaslee sets two tunes, Cradle Song and Away in a Manger. Following a straightforward presentation of each melody, Peaslee plays them against one another. The music swells to a full climax followed by a hushed ending.Peaslee employs a gentle hand in It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, using flugelhorn solos and duets in a jazz-waltz style.In Silent Night, the traditional carol gets an untraditional harmonization, propelled forward by give-and-take between the two groups of brass instruments in the brass choir: trumpets and trombones versus horns, euphoniums, and tuba.Hark! The Herald Angels Sing begins with a humorous blast of discordant harmonies as multiple carols are sounded at the same time. An up-tempo 4/4 announcement of the melody in the trombone is followed by a metrical modulation in 6/8-3/4 time. An additional metrical modulation bring the music back into 4/4, but at a slower tempo and in a pronounced jazz style. A suite in three movements by Ray Steadman-Allen, based on the Norwegian folk song "P? Kl?rfjell der kvelver seg borgi sa rein".The work opens with the melody in the flugel horn, and the theme is then developed and varied with many nuances throughout the work.The 2nd and 3rd movements are played continuously.The piece was commissioned by Manger Musiklag in 1988 and bears all the marks of the composer's masterly instrumentation. Een suite in drie delen door Ray Steadman-Allen, gebaseerd op de Noorse folk song ""P? Kl?rfjell der kvelver seg borgi sa rein"". Het werk opent met de melodie in de bugel, en het thema wordt vervolgens ontwikkeld en gevarieerd met veelnuances door het hele werk. Het tweede en derde deel worden zonder onderbreking gespeeld. The composition Kefas was written for the brass band 'Apollo' from Grou (The Netherlands), by order of the Unisono Foundation, the organisation for wind music in The Netherlands.The assignment was given on account of earning the Champions Title during the Dutch Brass Band Championships in the year 2001 (4th division). The theme of the composition links the tradition of the village Grou, not to celebrate Sint Nicolaas but Sint Pieter.By this typical Dutch festivity (in December) the holy Nicolaas gives presents to the children. It is a popular custom where young and old participate. Grou is the only place where this is not done by Sint Nicolaas but by Sint Pieter.Apart from that, on the 22th of Februari, a lot of festivities that take place,resemble those of the Sinterklaas celebration. In the composition two Sint Pieter songs are processed, set through bible scenes, wherein in among others the visit of Christ to the house of Peter's Mother-in-law and the calling of Peter are depicted. The title refers to the pronouncement of Christ, where he named Peter the rock on which he shall build his church. The Hebrew word for rock is Kephas. Kefas was premiered in 2003.

Jubilant Prelude - Toon Hagen - Dirk Annema
'Jubilant Prelude' is an orchestration of the 'Preludium over Psalm 150' originally composed for organ by Toon Hagen. Since 1998 Toon Hagen has been organ-player of the 'Grote or Sint Michaelskerk' in Zwolle (the Netherlands). He has written several 'contemporary' compositions for organ.'Jubilant Prelude' has a capricious character by the use of irregular measures and its many measure changes. The structure of the Prelude is that of a fugue and is based on motives from the psalm.After the first climax, which is both dynamic and harmonic, the theme in the Andante Jubiloso is clearly audible and it is alternated with erratic motifs. Tension increases until at last the psalm itself isheard in all its glory. The melody of the psalm sounds as a cantus firmus in tenor register, with motifs in ornamentation for saxophones, bugles and trumpets. The finale, like the prelude is capricious and vehement.The instrumentation for brassband was made by Dirk Annema. It is particularly colourful and has a surprising role for the percussion section.

The sparkling overture of this piece is no doubt 'great' and it is followed by a terrific melodic line with several beautiful romantic highlights. By means of a slowing down we get a more moderate tempo (tempo II) which enables a kind of concert march theme to develop. This is Peter York at best. Steve Sykes was most happy to recover this composition which was considered as being untraceable for many years.
