Concert Overture for Brass BandIn the year 1340 in the town of Ghent, a son was born to Edward III King of England and his Queen Phillipa. The boy, afterwards known as John O'Gaunt (Ghent) grew up to be a warrior and before he was 20 he was fighting in France beside his brother, the Black Prince. For many years he was occupied with the wars in France and Spain and was seldom in England. His first two marriages brought him great riches and position, but the love of his life was Catherine Swynford, who bore him four children. Whilst he was away , his Palace of Savoy was burnt to the ground by the mob during the Peasant's Revolt. Finally in 1394 he returned home and married Catherine, for whom he felt a strong affection since her first marriage in St. Clement Danes Church in the Strand, many years before. This piece was commissioned to be performed on the Georgian barge as part of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Pageant. Inspired by the "Gigue" (sometimes referred to as "Country Dance") in Handel's original Water Music, the piece has a rollicking, upbeat feel and is now newly arranged for brass band. The story that inspired the piece is of a pirate ship attacking the flotilla. The pirates are then confronted by the courageous defenders of the flotilla who are, of course triumphant in the end. The piece concludes with a final defiant statement of the heroic theme, and the pirates are gone forever.

VECTIS ISLE is the Roman name for the Isle of WrightSTATELY OSBORNEOsborne House was the summer residence of Queen Victoria. Music of fanfares and pageantry in 3/4 time, with a central delicate minuet section, before returning to the original fanfares and stately themes.PICTURESQUE CALBOURNECalbourne is a pretty, tiny country village with its feature of an old water mill. The music is pastorale in style. 6/8 rhythms with a free and easy waltz section.THE OLD CHURCH AT GODSHILLThis movement links directly from the second, but may be played on its own if desired. Godshill is a quaint but beautiful village of thatched cottages by an old church.SANDOWN HOLIDAYSThis final movement is intended to portray the happy atmosphere of this pleasant seaside resort, with just a moment or two to laze on the fine beaches under an afternoon sun before the final allegro concludes this suite.Duration 14 and a half mins

ABOUT THIS PIECE: Cantatio are pleased to release this arrangement of Sunset by Paul Mottram from his album Symphonic Minimalism. Originally recorded by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Abbey Road, this piece is often heard on TV and radio, most recently on Ken Bruce's show on BBC Radio 2 following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Paul says of this piece: "I very loosely modelled the track on some of the compositions of John Barry - a simple lyrical melodic style with an almost regal feel and beautiful orchestral sound. I was indeed imagining a sunset when I wrote it and had some sense of the piece having an ultimate warm, resigned, quiet finality about it". You can read more about the piece here. This composition is based on the march from Henry Purcell's Music for the funeral of Queen Mary II, a work written in 1694. In this fantasia, various movements flow from one to the next following the main theme; these movements not onlyelaborate on the theme, but also contrast with it. At times, the thematic material diverges so much, that the work acquires a character of its own; however, the composer often refers back to fragments of the theme. This work was test piece in the 4thdivision of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) in 2017.

Lead, Kindly Light is composed by the English composer Charles Henry Purday (1799-1885).This arrangement was originally written for Norwegian band Hjorungavag Brass.Purday was appointed conductor of psalmody at Crown Court ScotsChurch in Covent Garden, London, in the 1840's, during the ministry of Dr. John Cumming. Dr. Cumming's church was so popular that it was said traffic could not move in Bow Street and Drury Lane for the throng of carriages making their way toservices. Purday was a fine vocalist and had sung at the coronation of Queen Victoria. He became a music publisher, and was a pioneer in the movement for copyright law reform.

It's Alright - Mike Moran - Len Jenkins
"It's Alright", the theme song for the BBC TV series New Tricks, was written by Mike Moran, whose credits also include composing the song "Barcelona" for Freddy Mercury, the theme to the UK crime series 'Taggart' and the Lynsey de Paul entry to the Eurovision Song Contest. As a producer, he has worked on The Queen Album and Elaine Paige's Piaf. New Tricks follows New Scotland Yard's mythical Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad, which is staffed by retired police officers who have been recruited to look into unsolved crimes, including murders. Whilst this particular squad is fictitious, the concept is based firmly on fact. Although New Tricks does have serious plots, the series also contains a fair amount of humour, usually revolving around in-house banter, and the lyrics to Mike Moran's song does it justice. Dennis Waterman, who played Gerry Standing, one of the team, was the obvious choice of vocalist, although the song was never released commercially. Sadly Dennis died in May 2022.
