Baking Day - Naomi Styles
Baking Day is a fast, foot-tapping duet which will challenge your Euphonium and Eb bass players. It also features 'kitchen percussion' - the percussion section is invited to raid the kitchen for things that thud and clang, although parts for ordinary instruments are provided! There are opportunities for your percussion section to ad-lib in the middle section between E and F, to show off their capabilities. There are also places where banter between conductor and players can take place, making this a fun-filled entertainment piece that both shows off your duetists' talents and raises a smile.This work forms part of a series inspired by Christopher Lloyd's book 'What on earth Evolved?' which ranks the species that have had the biggest impact on the history of Earth and humankind. The series thus makes up a modern 'Carnival of the Animals'. Baking Day celebrates Yeast, a microscopic fungus which brings us bread, buns, wine, Marmite and even biofuel.

Three Carols was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic as part of their Holiday Brass series and was premiered at Avery Fisher Hall by the New York Philharmonic Principal Brass and Canadian Brass. Originally for 10 players, soon after the premiere I decided to score the piece for brass band. The brass band version was first performed by the New York Staff Band.Through the years I have been intrigued by carious carols from different countries and the challenge of creating musical treatments that sound fresh and original. When commissioned to write these brass arrangements, I wanted to create contrasting movements that could be performed either as a set or individually and thought that three carols from different countries would allow the opportunity for that contrast. The featured carols are the traditional Polish carol Infant Holy, What child is this? with lyrics by William Dix and set to the English folk song Greensleeves and the lesser-known Catalonian carol Cold December flies away.- Joseph Turrin

The clave, a rhythmic pattern, which originally comes from African music, was the inspiration for this innovative piece, all motifs and structures being derived from it. An exciting, original composition for brass band by Tim Paton. A complex work which entwines melodic lyricism amidst contemporary harmonies and scoring. A tour de force of Tim's creativity and a rewarding challenge for the performers and audience.Tim comments: The term exegesis is applied to a study which works out the meaning of something, an interpretation of a series of events, a comparison of ideas within a given medium, for example, "Biblical exegesis". This brass band piece is a musical exegesis.Section one is made up of three main themes, and although these themes are tonal within themselves, there is a sense that they are trying to understand one another. From the very beginning of this section, there is an element of bi-tonality and dissonance.The middle section is ponderous, where we hear elements of these three themes. It could be called the 'thinking section'.Section three almost interrupts this middle section, with fanfares displaying a realisation, still containing bi-tonality, but in harmony! We are soon led in to a hymn like celebration, followed by a determined, militaristic section for the percussion. Finally, the fanfares which opened this third section, reappear, taking us to a final conclusion.
