£49.95Bestowal of a Century - Christopher Bond
Bestowal of a Century (2014) was commissioned by Lowenna Taylor, and funded through her Harry Mortimer Trust award which she was presented with at the 2013 British Open Championship following the completion of her studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music in Cardiff. The 15-minute work received its world premiere at the Cornwall Youth Brass Band Christmas concert in 2014 with solosit, Lowenna, working alongside the band under the baton of Les Neish. The 'Bestowal' refers to the presentation of the Royal Trophy by the then Prince of Wales to the famous West of England Bandsman's Festival in Bugle in 1913. Over the years it has been won by some of the greatest names in brass banding, including Black Dyke and Munn & Feltons - although more recently it has become a wonderful open festival that includes sections for local bands as well as visitors from all over the banding globe. 2014 marked the one-hundredth anniversary of the presentation of the trophy, which is the only brass band trophy to have the official seal of royal patronage. The work, in three distinct sections, opens in a mysterious way, building progressively with interjections from the horn. The composer notes its as though one can imagine different part of the trophy being put together, piece by piece, until the trophy is complete and a climax is reached. Following this, a playful theme is presented which is developed throughout the first section and interacting between soloist and band. The second movement, in complete contrast, is a lyrical melody; heart-wrenching throughout, and sits well both as part of the concerto and also as a stand-alone solo item. The third movement is light-hearted and virtuosic, demonstrating the technical capabilities of the instrument with fast and virtuosic playing, and a cadenza towards the end of the work.

This piece was arranged by Halyna Ovcharenko, a Ukrainian composer who was born in Lugansk, a Ukrainian city that is currently under occupation by the Russian Federation. All the proceeds from this sale will go towards the 'A family for every orphan' appeal, which is providing emergency relief services to thousands of children and families in Ukraine. For more information about the charity please visit https://afamilyforeveryorphan.org/ukraine/ Halyna Ovcharenko has been composing music since she was 11. Many of her compositions of various genres have received international awards, but she discovered the world of brass band music with its specific timbre and huge range of musical colors only recently, in 2022, while composing her Vyshyvanka for Grimethorpe Colliery Band. Halyna comments: "I enjoyed my experience. Since then I have had an appetite to write more for brass bands, and here we are - an arrangement of a traditional English Christmas song which I have done especially to raise money for Ukrainian orphans. Their heroic parents stood for my Lugansk, for our Ukraine and for the whole World. I hope that the World will make these children feel that they are not left alone, giving them love, care and joy." The picture on the front cover was drawn by Victoria Lebed, a Ukrainian girl. This PDF download includes parts and score. This French traditional Christmas song has been arranged for concert band in a very surprising and idiosyncratic way. Accessible, recognizable and fresh. The snare drum starts with the piccolo making cheerful interludes, after which slowly more and more instruments join in the accompaniment and then let the sharp brass usher in the main melody with a signal. In contrast to the way the piece started by slowly getting stronger and stronger, it ends up like a candle that slowly goes out.

2269: Intrada - Christians Awake (Stephen Gibson)This intrada heralds the happy morning when Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus. Fanfares surround the traditional Christmas Day hymn, Christians Awake (C.C. 20), where we are encouraged to 'awake, salute the happy morn'. Written in a processional style, this music was composed as a concert opener to be performed in a large church setting.2270: Jesus loves me (Stanley Kelley)Jesus loves me! (S.A.S.B. 807) is a song many church-goers learn as children. While written for children, its message is for everyone. John 15:9 says, 'As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you.'2271: Prelude on 'Deep Harmony' (Geoffrey Nobes)This piece was written for the Blendworth Band of Hampshire. The hymn tune, by Handel Parker, is one of the most beautiful and iconic melodies ever written, with lovely harmony supporting the rise and fall of a simple but perfect melodic line.2272: To the hills (Paul Sharman)The inspiration for this arrangement came during a walking holiday in the Lake District. Looking towards the hills brought to mind the words of Psalm 121 and Ernest Rance's setting of that passage, I Lift Up My Eyes (S.A.S.B. 208), with its lovely tune Ochills. This arrangement was written shortly after the composer's return home.

Taking the form of an overture, this piece contains passing references to many well-known festive songs, and features Hark! the herald angels sing (C.C. 38), The first Nowell (C.C. 86), Have yourself a merry little Christmas (C.C. 115) and O come, all ye faithful (C.C. 61).There are a lot of notes in this music. Keep it light throughout and make the most of every opportunity to play quietly. In sections D and E, The first Nowell is presented in 2/2 time. Getting used to this unusual presentation of the melody may take careful rehearsal.

Colonel Norman Bearcroft)'Joy to the world' is a melody often attributed to Handel, but it is a bringing together of a couple of brief snippets of themes from his oratorio, 'Messiah'. These were put together by Lowell Mason to form the tune, 'Antioch', which we use for this carol. The carol has been arranged in majestic style by Lieut-Colonel Norman Bearcroft.No. 2124 Night of Joy (Andrew Wainwright)'Night of Joy' is based on a traditional Spanish Christmas song entitled 'Cantemos a Maria' ('Let's sing to Mary').No. 2125 Dedication (Dr Kenneth Downie)A setting of Colonel Brindley Boon's beautiful song of dedication, 'I dedicate myself to thee' (Musical Salvationist, November 1950).No. 2126 Cornet Duet - Synergy (Captain Martin Cordner)This piece celebrates the Biblical principle of believers working together in the Body of Christ and incorporates the song with words by Catherine Baird 'We're in Gods Army and we fight together with the composers own melody to Philip Paul Bliss's words 'Whosoever heareth! shout, shout the sound.

Brief references are also made to the choruses 'Grace ther is my every debt to pay' and 'Take up thy cross and follow me.No. 1241(1) Cornet Solo - In the bleak mid-winter (Trevor Worthington)A setting for cornet and band of the tune 'Cranham', written by Gustav Holst, with which we associate the words of the well-loved popular Christmas Carol.No. 1241(2) Invocation for thanksgiving (David Rowsell)Invocation, by definition, means ' a call to worship'. This music will serve this purpose for any Harvest or Thanksgiving service, using the tune, 'Come, ye thankful people, come'.No. 1242 High and lifted up (Steven Ponsford)This is music of an exciting yet relaxed nature, and it is intended that this piece be used to inspire and to 'lift up' listeners and players alike. Based on Michael W Smith's contemporary worship song, 'Open the eyes of my heart', this also contains the song 'Holy, holy, holy', to the tune of Nicea.
