Harry Connick Jr. is an American pianist, singer, composer and actor from New Orleans. He has released many albums and perform frequently with his own big band. "Do Dat Thing" is a real "feel-good" song composed in New Orleans style. The tempo must not be too fast. A kind of rough, heavy groove is preferred. When staccato is notated, the 8th notes have to be straight. The notations in the Drums-part is optional. From 35, the rhythm in the bass-line is meant as information for the musician. Be aware of the dynamics from the beginning (not too loud) to give it a "lift" at the end of the piece.

Christmas Brass is a fantasy on six carols, originally commissioned by Mark Freeh for the Manhattan Brass Choir. Duration: 16:30The well-known tune, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, a hymn originally based on a plainsong melody, is here set in 5/4 meter. Modal harmonies are combined with big band style as the piece gains momentum, greatly accentuating the mood of the words, "Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel." The opening 5/4 statement of the theme returns, and the piece ends quietly.In Beautiful Savior (also known by the title Fairest Lord Jesus), a hushed beginning featuring horns, euphoniums, and a muted trumpet, leads through a key change to a satisfying, chorale-likeclosing passage.In Away in a Manger, Peaslee sets two tunes, Cradle Song and Away in a Manger. Following a straightforward presentation of each melody, Peaslee plays them against one another. The music swells to a full climax followed by a hushed ending.Peaslee employs a gentle hand in It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, using flugelhorn solos and duets in a jazz-waltz style.In Silent Night, the traditional carol gets an untraditional harmonization, propelled forward by give-and-take between the two groups of brass instruments in the brass choir: trumpets and trombones versus horns, euphoniums, and tuba.Hark! The Herald Angels Sing begins with a humorous blast of discordant harmonies as multiple carols are sounded at the same time. An up-tempo 4/4 announcement of the melody in the trombone is followed by a metrical modulation in 6/8-3/4 time. An additional metrical modulation bring the music back into 4/4, but at a slower tempo and in a pronounced jazz style. The Dreaded Groove and Hook is an up-tempo acid-jazz number that draws inspiration from bands like Jamiroquai and The Youngblood Brass Band. The groove in question is the main tune that is shared round theband, whilst the hook, in 'pop' terms, is the catchy bit of the song. The whole band joins in to play a huge 'riff' that acts as a chorus to the jazz-like verses. The piece was commissioned by JasonKatsikaris and The Leyland Band, who gave the first performance as part of their programme for the Brass In Concert Championships, held at The Sage, Gateshead on the 16th November 2008. God rest ye merry Gentlemen - Andrew R. Mackereth
'God rest ye merry, Gentlemen' is an ancient English carol. It was first published in 1833, but it can be traced as far back as the 15th century, which makes it one of the oldest carols known. 'God rest ye merry' is a Middle English salutation. In this manner, people wished one another greatness and might. In modern English, the first line of this carol would read 'May God keep you mighty, gentlemen'. Andrew R. Mackereth has not kept to the original words in his up-tempo arrangement of the carol. It is still clearly recognizable, but the arranger has taken a good many liberties. Sometimes a particular note is held longer, at times motifs follow oneanother in various parts. If you listen carefully, you may even be able to detect a motif from another well-known song.

A brief history: Pentecost Monday was a special day for schools in Yorkshire (England). There were a variety of activities. The pupils of Sabine Baring-Gould would meet with the children of a nearby village. It seemed like a good idea that during the walk would be sung. But she could not find a suitable song and decided to write one by herself. "Onward Christian Soldiers" was the result. It soon became very popular, though she herself was not entirely satisfied with the rhyme scheme. The melody used (St. Gertrude) was by the famous English composer Sir Arthur S. Sullivan. Back to now: Gawan Roberts, has given the hymn a proper update. He gave the still popularsong a solid rock beat and added daring harmonies. So it's popular, for current generations, again for years. Onward!

The Yiddish word 'Klezmer' has been derived from the Old Hebrew words 'Kley' (tool, instrument) and 'Zemer' (song, singing, making music).Klezmer is the traditional music of Jews from Eastern Europe.Yiddish musicians (Klezmorim) were regularly invited to come and play at Yiddish weddings as well as several other Jewish celebrations and festive occasions. Despite its close connection with traditional Eastern European folk music, Klezmer music has succeeded in preserving its distinctive Jewish character. 'Klezmer Discovery' is a voyage of discovery through the richly varied music of the Jewish people from Eastern Europe.The introduction consists of a number of motives from differenttraditional melodies (a Mitzve Tenzel and L'cha Dodi), followed by a melody in 3/8th time (Kandel's Hora). This dance melody originally came from Bessarabia (present-day Moldavia) and was taken along to America by Jewish musicians round 1900. Subsequently, 'Der Terk in Amerika', a composition by famous clarinet player Naftule Brandwein can be heard. A number of fast, cheerful dance melodies (bulgars) form the finale of 'Klezmer Discovery' (Lebedyk un Freylekh, Lomir sich iberbetn and Sherele).

This arrangement is written to commemorate Robert Kvam, a trumpeter, conductor and instrument repair technician.He died of cancer in 2019, only 54 years old.The quiet, beautiful hymn There is power in the folded hands (Trygve Bjerkrheim / Oivind Tonnesen) was his favorite song, and the tune and lyrics are the fundament of this arrangement. Especially the line in themselves, the hands are small and weak is an important motif to the arrangement.
