Sunset was written in June 2023 as a graduation present for the composer's son Callum and is dedicated to him. It portrays an older father (the composer) reminiscing about the love, respect and pride he has for his grown-up son and all that he has achieved and worked for. Sunset is lyrical and song-like in style. A soaring solo line is accompanied by a mainly homophonic background which should support, but never overpower the soloist. The tutti sections feature the melody accompanied by flowing scalic figures which portray the passing of time. The piece ends with an ad lib cadenza section where the soloist can really put their own mark on the music. £159.99Omaggio (Euphonium Concerto No.4) (Euphonium Solo with Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
Omaggio was commissioned by Steven Mead in celebration of his 60th birthday and in memory of his father, Rex. He gave the premiere of the brass band version in Rome in March 2022, accompanied by the Italian Brass Band conducted by Filippo Cangiamilla. The concert band premiere took place on 6th July that year as part of the 2022 Spanish International Tuba Euphonium Conference, accompanied by the Banda municipal de msica de Malaga.The concerto is set in 3 continuous movements, which are united by a recurring syncopated interval of a fifth. The first movement, Fantasia, opens with this motive accompanying an extended monologue for the soloist. This is followed by a lengthy bridge passage by the band, which is eventually joined by the soloist, who guides the music back to the opening soliloquy, leading to an energetic central section. This develops until the opening material again returns to introduce the second movement, Ballad, which revolves around an expressive melody for the soloist, interspersed by accompanied cadenzas. The third movement, The King Triumphant, pays homage to Steven's late father, Rex, and its title alludes both to Rex's name (Rex being Latin for king) as well as his love of Eric Ball's Salvationist masterpiece, The Kingdom Triumphant. The finale is an energetic tour-de-force featuring an acrobatic 6/8 melody, which is interrupted twice by the magnificent hymn tune, Helmsley, which Ball uses so effectively in The Kingdom Triumphant. A galloping coda brings the work to a close.

Florence Price was an American classical composer, pianist, organist and music teacher. She is noted as the first African-American woman to be recognised as a symphonic composer, and the first to have a composition played by a major orchestra. Price composed over 300 works: four symphonies, four concertos, as well as choral works, art songs, chamber music and music for solo instruments. In 2009, a substantial collection of her works and papers that had been previously considered lost was found in her abandoned summer home. Amongst these was this delightful work, Adoration, which had been composed in the 1950s for organ. According to IMSLP.org, the piece "failed to meet notice or renewal requirements to secure statutory copyright with no 'restoration' under the GATT amendments" and therefore is in the public domain. A version for violin and piano by Elaine Fine has become popular. This setting for cornet soloist with brass band has been arranged by Andrew Wainwright. VIEW SCORE PDF This trumpet solo was written by Nick Simmons-Smith at the request of Dallas Brass Band for a Christmas concert featuring Elmer Churampi, international trumpet soloist. The solo features three Christmas songs: i. Mi Burrito Sabanero voy camino de Belen (With my donkey of the Savannah, I'm going to Bethlehem) ii. Noche de paz (Silent night) iii. Campana Sobre Campana (Bell above bells, O bells of Bethlehem) These songs are all very popular in Central and South America - including Peru, where Elmer Churampi is originally from. Each tune has been given a different Latin treatment producing a fast-slow-fast festive concert solo. The solo is not long, but each movement could be played individually. Derick Kane specifically asked Peter Graham to write a solo with the title 'Canaan's Land' in response to Stephen Bulla's solo 'Air 'n Variations' written for Aaron VanderWeele, all puns intended! The theme is the song 'Bound for Canaan's shore' and the first variation pays homage to Norman Bearcroft's 'The Better World' which was also especially written for Derick Kane. The slow section makes use of the tune 'A little star peeps o'er the hill' after which follows the finale, in a polonaise style, with further shades of 'The Better World'.

At one time the Red Kite was close to national extinction in the UK but now it is possible to admire this distinctive bird of prey with its red colouring and forked tail. I love watching it soaring so gracefully through the sky. I attempted to catch that feeling in this solo composed for Martin Smith. In writing it I had in mind making the euphonium glide solitary and effortlessly, occasionally swooping down then reclaiming its high altitude.To create the desired atmosphere, I avoided too many root position chords and enhanced the feeling of floating by adding notes to a lot of the harmony, giving it subtle colour. The harmonic rhythm is slow but the movement switches in the way that the Red Kite can make slight changes of direction by minor adjustments of its tail. On top of this accompaniment the soloist is left to sing with a sense of grace and freedom.- Rob WiffinDuration: 3.45
