The Seventh Night of July - Itaru Sakai - Marc Jeanbourquin

In Japan, July the 7th is a holiday known as Tanabata, for which large celebrations are held throughout the country. The holiday is based on a legend about a young man and a young woman who are separated by the Milky Way and can only see each other once a year on this night. The Seventh Night of July is Itaru Sakai's musical interpretation of this romantic legend. The flugel horn and euphonium solos during the middle movement represent the two main themes from the legend.

    Dreaming

Dreaming (German: Tr?umerei) is the seventh of thirteen pieces by Robert Schumann from his collection: 'Kinderszenen' (Scenes from Childhood). This is one of Schumann's best known pieces - a melody instantly recognisable by many. The following arrangement was produced as the finale piece for Wingates Band's appearance at the 2015 Brass in Concert competition at the Sage Gatesehead. The theme of the programme presented was 'Alice in Wonderland' and the following arrangement contains references to other pieces used in the programme. The other pieces presented were: 'Flow my Tears' (available from Cantatio Music), 'Mad March Hare's March and the Well Crazy Tea Party' (available late 2017) and 'Piano Concerto Number 2 by Rachmaninov' (available from Cantatio Music).

Variations on a Chord - Jan de Haan

Variations on a Chord was composed on the occasion of the second lustrum of the Dutch Brass Band Championships celebrated in 1990. The piece is the immediate sequel to Contrasten a piece which was composed in 1986, and which is performed all over the world. Not only was the final chord of this previous work used as a starting point for the new composition, but Variations on a Chord is also the first concert piece for brass band composed by Jan de Haan since then. The several variations are based on a solemn theme. The so-called minor-major seventh chord is easily detectable. The structure of the piece is such that the lyrical theme is preceded by a majestic introduction, and is followed by eight variations each strongly contrasting in character. The piece finishes in a short but extremely spectacular coda.
