£36.13Dance of the Knights (Brass Band) Prokofiev arr. Phil Rayment
Sergei Prokofiev wrote his score for the ballet Romeo and Juliet in 1935, shortly after he had returned to Stalinist Russia. The ballet itself premiered in December 1938 and has had lasting, worldwide popularity in the nearly 90 years since its inception. However there was initially controversy with his adaptation of the Shakespearean drama (he wrote a happy ending) and state pressure was applied in several rewrites. Prokofiev later arranged three suites of music from the ballet, rich in inventive scoring and clever leitmotif. These suites have proven popular in performances and recordings throughout the orchestral world. This arrangement for brass band is excerpted from the first movement of the second suite (Op. 64b), entitled The Montagues and Capulets. It showcases Prokofiev's unique compositional voice and should prove to be an entertaining programme piece for bands. Length: 4.00 minutes PDF download includes score and parts. Horn in F/E flat with Brass BandComposed in 1971 for Ifor James, the Concerto for French Horn and Band revealed some of those elements that have made Gregson's music so popular with audiences (and not just brass band audiences) worldwide: the boldness of his melodies, with the interval of the fourth revealing his admiration for the music of Paul Hindemith; his incisive rhythms, betraying the influence of another favourite composer, Bla Bartk; an admirable economy of means; and the clarity of his scoring.Each of the Concerto's three movements displays a different facet of the French Horn's character. The first is serious, symphonic in impulse, the rising fourths of the opening gesture giving the music an almost Germanic weight. In the slow movement, the soloist becomes the first among equals, sharing with the cornet soloist some typically haunting melodies. The lyrical flow is interrupted at the mid-point by mysterious, fleet-of-foot cadenzas. A rondo finale brings the concerto to a lighthearted conclusion. The rising fourths here are the impulse for a jaunty theme which reveals another of Gregson's early influences - William Walton, and in particular that composer's Partita for orchestra.

Although fairly traditional concepts have been kept in planning the architecture of the work, certain aspects of the instrumentation, or scoring, are more contemporary in colouristic terms, as befits a composer writing in the 21st century. However, the percussion requirements are fairly modest, similar to those used in the works of that period. The brass band tradition owes much to the composers of that period, for through their music they established a truly homogenous 'British' brass band sound which has spread throughout many parts of the world. That tradition flourishes today and remains important for today's composers, even if their musical language is far removed from that of their predecessors.
