Inspired by a lifelong friendship and decades of caroling experience with The Salvation Army, revered composer William Himes has crafted accessible duet arrangements designed specifically for flexible instrumentation. After years of performing Christmas music in larger ensembles and later adapting those traditions into euphonium duets with his friend Mick, Himes realized the need for arrangements that sound full and satisfying without a full ensemble. As Himes explains, "Attempting to play duets using quartet books didn't work well because the most suitable alto harmony constantly shifted between the second and third part lines. We also discovered that our duets attracted as many Christmas donations as full ensembles!" WELLINGTONIAN, The (Brass Band Set) - Harold Scotney
Scotney immortalised his native town and corps in this march and also in 'Wellington Citadel'. In a departure from normal process, Scotney uses a Salvation Army song, 'A robe of white' in the first strain while the hymn-like trio section has no associated text.

George Marshall suffered a terrible mining accident four months after his marriage in 1918. Confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life, Marshall subsequently wrote many outstanding choral and instrumental works for The Salvation Army of which this march is one of the most popular.

SPIRIT OF PRAISE (Brass Band Set) - George Marshall
The trio section of this march closely follows the vocal score of a setting of the hymn Praise my soul, the king of heaven by A. P. Berggren of Denmark. This hymn-like style, especially in the trio section, was not uncommon in Salvation Army marches of the period, intentionally devotional and a contrast to the lively nature which surrounded it.
