Concerto After VivaldiDuring his lifetime, Antonio Vivaldi was known as 'il Prete Rosso', the Red Priest, thanks to his youthful ordination and his flaming red hair. The son of a violinist at San Marco in Venice, Vivaldi's musical pedigree was impeccable and an excellent start to his career was coupled with astounding energy and productivity. His vast output of concerti grossi, using soloists in groups, inspired this composition and performers may choose appropriate stage positions for the various groupings of cornets and trombones, spaced around the performance area. The score quotes freely from some of Vivaldi's most popular compositions, including 'Winter' from The Four Seasons, the motet Nisi Dominus, the famous Gloria and the fugue from the Concerto grosso in D minor found in L'Estro Armonico.However, it is the musical spirit of Vivaldi, a close contemporary of both Handel and Casanova, that inspired this music, which should be played with a mixture of accuracy and abandoned virtuosity. The musical images in this piece have clear associations in the composer's mind with individual Venetian locations, ranging from bustling street scenes to vaulted interiors, and describing the famous journey down the Grand Canal, past the Doge's Palace, to the Ospedale della Pieta where Vivaldi worked for so many years.Duration: 14.00

Earlier in the same year the composer extracted several movements from the ballet to form a concert suite. Por una cabeza, literally translated as "by a head [of a horse]" in Spanish (meaning a horse winning a race by one head's distance), is one of the most famous and popular Argentine tangos.Composer Carlos Gardel (11 December 1890 - 24 June 1935) was a singer, songwriter and actor, and is perhaps the most prominent figure in the history of tango. The music has appeared in numerous TV and Film soundtracks, perhaps most memorably in the famous dancing scene featuring Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman. This extended arrangement for cornet (or trumpet) incorporates a cadenza and newly written interludes.

This endearingly popular seasonal song has long been a Christmas favourite, even though the lyrics don't mention 'Christmas' at all. The words were by Dick Smith (1901-1935) and the music by Felix Bernard (1897-1944). The inspiration was reportedly a visit by Smith to Honesdale's (his hometown) Central Park when it was covered in snow.The first recording was made by Richard Himber's Ritz-Carlton Orchestra in 1934. The same year Guy Lombardo and his band, The Royal Canadians, took the song to number 2 in the US Billboard Chart, where it stayed for 9 weeks. It has since been recorded by over 150 artists, the most successful versions being by Perry Como and the Andrews Sisters, both released in 1946.

Escape Velocity is the scientific term for the speed at which a body overcomes the gravitational pull of another body. Thematically, the music seeks to capture the busyness and 'gravitational pull' of the fallen world and the struggle of the believer to overcome and escape into the restful presence of God. Eventually, the believer breaks free from the world, the work culminating in a presentation of the popular Hillsong anthem, 'I will run to you'.
