Fanfares and Love Songs was commissioned by the National Children's Brass Band of Great Britain for performance on 25th July 2009. Its three movements contrast the extrovert and lyrical qualities of the traditional brass band. The fanfare with which the work opens involves the whole cornet section. The second movement is reflective in mood, beginning somewhat pensively on muted brass, and building to an emotional climax before subsiding back to a distant pianissimo chord. Selected as the Section 4 test piece for the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain 2025Partita dates from 1971, when it was commissioned by the Redbridge Youth Band. The musical thread that runs through the work is the 13th century plainsong Dies Irae from the Requiem Mass. This gives the work a rather sombre tone which is audible right from the start of its first movement Intrada. The initial hammer-like chords of the opening and conclusion are only interrupted momentarily by a more lyrical modal tune. Even here, on its repetition, it is surrounded by more insistent textural patterns.The second movement, Chorale and Variations, uses the Dies Irae as the basis for an extended melody in the manner of a baroque sarabande. The five variations that follow are varied in texture, tempi, and dynamics. The final March is more optimistic in mood and presents as its main idea a rather jaunty theme which gets developed throughout the movement. However, the ominous presence of the Dies Irae has the last say with a final statement to round off the work.Duration: 11.00

While in the Oxford University Jazz Orchestra, trumpeter Alex Gallafent confided that he had always wished there was a big band arrangement of 'March to the Scaffold' opening with Gene Kruppa toms. Fast forward several years to the Kew Wind Orchestra, where Andy Black is a chartered surveyor who "loves a nice piece of scaff...". Here is a great arrangement done for brass band.The protagonist in the story of this 4th movement is having a nightmare that he has killed his loved one, that he is condemned and he is being led to execution where he will witness his own guillotining.

Triquetra takes the form of a free fantasia on the familiar hymn Old Hundreth. The tune appears in full in four different guises - harmonically and rhythmically altered on each occasion. Fragments of the melody are also used to generate new ideas, most notably in the contrasting middle section where the opening phrase of the hymn appears in inversion.As to the title, the Triquetra (from the Latin triquetrus meaning three-corned) symbol is representative of the Christian Trinity and in that respect relates to the final line of text in Old Hundreth, also known as the Doxology: Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.Triquetra was written for Stephen Cobb in recognition of 30 years outstanding service as conductor of the International Staff Band of the Salvation Army.Duration: 7.00

This bright and attractive concert overture was written while the comp0ser was living in Spain and enjoying life in the sun - a rare experience for an Englishman! It is intended to be an effervescent and cheerful piece, enjoyable both to play and to listen to. There are no great technical challenges in the music but it is essential that the performers play with a firm grasp of the rhythmic nature of the piece.It opens with a bold fanfare, giving the first statement of a theme that is to be used throughout. Once the broad opening is over the music has a feeling of energy and joy that drives all the way through the piece. The style is light and jazz-inflected and owes much to the compositional idiom of Goff Richards, the guru of entertaining band music.Duration: 5.00
