    A Swiss Festival Overture - Philip Sparke

    The Berne Music Association commissioned a Swiss Festival Overture for the Bern Canton Music Festival held in Langenthal in 1989. It was composed both for brass and wind bands as both types of band took part in the contest.The overture starts with a noble and spacious fanfare based on a Bb triad. A quieter moment follows with a long theme unfolding from echoes of the fanfare and this builds to a climax where the fanfare returns. Over a stained chord this triad figure echoesin free time and introduces a short euphonium cadenza. This leads back to the opening, which accelerates into a lively Vivo. Percussion hammers out a new rhythm and after a few bars a rhythmic accompaniment starts up over which a perky tune which starts quietly is then taken up by the full band. A short bridge passage on the horns leads to a legato tune from the middle of the band which is again taken up by the full band. After a climax this subsides to a sustained bass note with rhythmic echoes of the first vivo tune. Bit by bit this reappears until the a full-blown recapitulation leads to a short Coda based on the opening fanfare.

    Academic Festival Overture - Johannes Brahms

    In 1881, Brahms accepted the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Breslau University in Poland.For the occasion, he wrote his Academic Festival Overture, for orchestra, basing it on student songs. It is a splendid example of a serious composer writing a piece of musical “fun”.Romantic in style, the composer’s great skill is evident in his linking of the tunes, and his different treatment of them.In performance, there is rich scope for expression, for tenderness, boisterousness and high spirits, as well as thoughtfulness and an underlying purpose are all present in the music.The Overture ends with a typically Brahmsian climax, built into a welter of instrumental colour.The arrangement for brass band is by Denis Wright.

    Bestowal of a Century - Christopher Bond

    Tenor Horn Solo with Brass BandBestowal of a Century (2014) was commissioned by Lowenna Taylor, and funded through her Harry Mortimer Trust award which she was presented with at the 2013 British Open Championship following the completion of her studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music in Cardiff. The 15-minute work received its world premiere at the Cornwall Youth Brass Band Christmas concert in 2014 with solosit, Lowenna, working alongside the band under the baton of Les Neish.The Bestowal refers to the presentation of the Royal Trophy by the then Prince of Wales to the famous West of England Bandsman’s Festival in Bugle in 1913. Over the years it has been won by some of the greatest names in brass banding, including Black Dyke and Munn & Feltons - although more recently it has become a wonderful open festival that includes sections for local bands as well as visitors from all over the banding globe. 2014 marked the one-hundredth anniversary of the presentation of the trophy, which is the only brass band trophy to have the official seal of royal patronage.The work, in three distinct sections, opens in a mysterious way, building progressively with interjections from the horn. The composer notes its as though one can imagine different part of the trophy being put together, piece by piece, until the trophy is complete and a climax is reached. Following this, a playful theme is presented which is developed throughout the first section and interacting between soloist and band.The second movement, in complete contrast, is a lyrical melody; heart-wrenching throughout, and sits well both as part of the concerto and also as a stand-alone solo item. The third movement is light-hearted and virtuosic, demonstrating the technical capabilities of the instrument with fast and virtuosic playing, and a cadenza towards the end of the work.

    Variations on a Theme of Michael Tippett

Hindmarsh) Danse des Amis Bramwell Tovey Midsummer Song Edward Gregson Scherzettino Michael Ball Collage Elgar Howarth Birthday Fugue – Finale Philip Wilby Devised by Paul Hindmarsh to celebrate the centenary of Sir Michael Tippert in 2006, this unqiue collaboration between five leading creative voices in brass band music of recent years also celebrated the 60th and 70th birthdays of two of its contributors, Edward Gregson and Elgar Howarth. Philip Wilby pays birthday tributes in his dramatic fugal finale. The theme is taken from Tippett's opera The Midsummer Marriage, and it also appears in his Birthday Suite for Prince Charles (1948), scored predominently for brass. The work was written for Foden's Band and Bramwell Tovey to perform at the 2006 RNCM Festival of Brass in Manchester (UK). The same artists have also recorded it for NMC. Variations on a theme of Michael Tippett is a demanding work that has techncial and musical challenges appropriate to Championship Section brass band competitions, while also possessing considerable audience appeal.     Abide with me for euphonium and brass band, arr. Paul McGhee

    Paul McGhee made this haunting arrangement of W.H. Monk's famous hymn tune for the young Belgianstar of the euphonium Glenn Van Looy, who performed it on 27 January 2013 at the Royal NorthernCollege of Music Festival of Brass, with the Leyland Band conducted by Michael Bach. Surrounding thethree verses of the solo line are wisps of texture, irregular rhythms and colours form brass andpercussion, giving the music an unsettled feel. Abide with me is a favourite of Paul McGhee, who says“When watching the film 28 Days Later I thought it would make a rather striking arrangement for brassband. This was confirmed further when the hymn was used at the 2012 opening ceremony of the LondonOlympics.     DURATION: 14 minutes. DIFFICULTY: Championship. 'Songs of Ascent' was composed for the Royal Northern College of Music Brass Band, as part of their programme for the 2019 RNCM Festival of Brass. In my view, the festival itself is the leading showcase for original contemporary music for the medium (in a concert setting) in the world and therefore an ideal place to explore new ideas and sounds, which was a notion fundamental to the construction of this work. The piece is subtitled 'Out of the Depths, I cry to you, O Lord'; the opening line of Psalm 130 (which forms part of a set of 15 psalsm, 120-134 known as the Songs of Ascent") which forms the main inspiration for much of the musical material. Following an extended opening for four individual tuba lines, there are a number of solos for members of the band off stage, with bleak and deep accompaniment lines, reflecting the words of Psalm 130. Amongst these 'songs of ascents', the most common and strong themes are repentance and redemption; with the central core of this work emerging 'from the depths' to reveal one of very few calming and reflective passages of the work utilising the tune of 'Guide Me O Thy Great Redeemer' in a new setting, featuring the Solo Horn and Bass Trombone, before returning to the ethereal and dark timbres that form much of the music up to this point. In terms of compositional technique, this work is solely based on a set of 4 9-note scales in their various unique transpositions (below). Each of these scales provide a set of 2 whole tone scales, 6 minor triads, 6 major triads and is built on 9 augmented triads. Whilst most of the music in this work is based melodically on the set of notes (heard right at the outset in the motif in the tuba line), the central section delves into the harmonic capabilities of these 'modes', using a number of the 7 'keys' which can be derived from the minor & major chords derived in each scale. All 4 scales are used independantly to each other, with whole sections of the work focussing on each mode. 'Songs of Ascent' was selected as the set work for the Championship Section at the Butlin's Mineworker's Championships in 2020.

    Gaudete - Christopher Bond

    For Soprano Cornet & Brass Band, Commissioned by & Written for Steve Stewart & Cory BandGaudete is a sacred Christmas carol, which is thought to have been composed in the 16th century, but could easily have existed as a monophonic hymn in the late medieval period. Within the lyrics, there are references to Christ, Virgin Mary, Grace, Ezekiel and Salvation. This arrangement takes the striking tune and re-works it for Soprano Cornet and band, transforming the melody in places, whilst also keeping that familiar tune in its original form. Gaudete was recorded by Steve Stewart & Cory Band in 2016, featuring on its album 'A Festival of Fanfares & Carols'.
