    Sanctuary - Philip Sparke

Sanctuary was commissioned by Eastern Bay of Plenty Brass from New Zealand - and was performed as an own choice piece at the 2018 New Zealand National Brass Band Championships. It opens with an expressive cornet solo, hymn-like in mood. A slightly faster central section builds to a change of key and an expansive return of the opening melody, this time scored for full band. After an emotional climax the mood subsides, leading to a quiet close.

The song is the same melody that was used for the "The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo".Norwegian singer/banjo player Kari Svendsen is one of many performers who have made recordings of the tune from then on to this day. "Gurines March" is great for parade, where it certainly will bring a smile or two among the audience.

Sleepers Wake - Johann Sebastian Bach - Philip Sparke

This enchanting melody is from the fourth movement of Bach's Cantata 140 which was composed in 1731 using the parable of the wise and foolish virgins as the text. The work is beautiful in its simplicity with only three melodic lines, demonstrating Bach's counterpoint at its best. For greatest effect it is suggested that the cornets and trombones play behind the band or to the right and left of the stage.
