    Landscapes - Bertrand Moren

Landscapes is a work structured around two main ideas. On the one hand, the music freely paints some of the superb landscapes I've seen during several of my trips around the world. Listeners should, however, not be influenced by this programmatic framework and are encouraged to build their own 'mind pictures'.On the other hand, Landscapes constitutes a test piece for each section of the brass band. Indeed, each musical landscape highlights a particular register. A small group of soloists is given the opportunity to fully display its skills in dialogue with the rest of the band (the tutti), hence the name 'concerto grosso'. Landscapes also relies on the band's different soloist musicians when it comes to express highly complex, musically and technically challenging passages.

Land of the Living Skies - Peter Meechan

From the composer:a??Commissioned by tuba virtuoso Patrick Sheridan, Land of the Living Skies is inspired by the love of photography shared by both Patrick and I.After moving from the UK to Saskatchewan, Canada, there were many changes, but perhaps the most striking of all were the skyscapes that my new home produced; stunning sunsets, incredible views of the Milky Way, amazing moonlit landscapes, and - of course - the Northern Lights. This piece was the last I wrote before moving away from Saskatchewan and. given that the Province calls itself the a??Land of the Living Skiesa?, it seemed only fitting to name the work after its amazing skies that had provided a lifetimea??s worth of inspiration. The piece is dedicated to Patrick Sheridan, an amazing tubist, musician, educator and friend.a?Pete Meechan, January 2018

Monet on the Embankment - Paul McGhee

Monet on the Embankment was commissioned by Leigh Baker for Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band's performance at Brass in Concert 2014, where it received the prize for best new composition/arrangement.Monet on the Embankment takes Claude Monet's Houses of Parliament collection as it's inspiration, a total of nineteen canvases, which were the same scene - all studies in changing landscapes. While the Parliament series has Westminister Palace, it is so distorted by the fog and smog that it becomes secondary as the subject - as we see not just the effect of light on objects but also the effect of light on the atmosphere itself. It is these distortions of light that the I have aimed to create in my piece, by using muted effects, various percussion instruments, extreme registers and dynamics as well as incorporating quarter-tones to further distort the harmonic picture. Whilst looking to the past for inspiration through Mussorgsky's 'Promenade', the music most definitely looks to the future, aiming to place the setting for Monet's masterpiece's firmly in the present.Paul McGhee

Sunrise Over Blue Ridge - Dan Price

Blue Ridge (or The Blue Ridge Mountains) is a mountain range within the larger Appalachian Mountains. The trees growing on the mountainside in this area release hydrocarbons into the atmosphere. The natural haze produced in this process, when the range is viewed from a distance, gives the mountain a distinctive blue-ish colour. Various Indian tribes including Siouan, Manahoacs, Shawnee and Cherokee farmed the mountain-side and fished the Blue Ridge Lake for food, making Blue Ridge their natural homeland. In the early 1600s, western settlers moved into Virginia and Georgia. As their trade and industry increased in size, so did the land they required. This expansion included encroachment into Native American's land which caused frequent hostility between settlers and tribes. Eventually the native inhabitants were pushed further and further into the west and eventually out of the Blue Ridge mountain range. Blue Ridge is now predominantly a tourist area stretching across two national parks, Shenandoah and the Great Smoky Mountains. Sunrise Over Blue Ridge takes its inspiration from the wonderful landscapes which can be seen in this part of the world. Sunrise Over Blue Ridge is dedicated to Cory Band and received its premi?re in November 2008 at The Sage, Gateshead, as part of the band's winning programme at the Brass in Concert Championships.
