The Irish Washerwoman - Irish Traditional

The Irish jig is very fashionable within the traditions of Irish dance music and none more so than this particular favourite, The Irish Washerwoman. There are various forms of jig including the 'single jig', 'slip jig' and 'slide jig'. Written in 6/8 time, this skilful setting by Rodney Newton breathes new life into the popular tune and is a perfect example of the 'double jig'.The Irish Washerwoman can be heard on the CD Celtic Charm (DOYCD214) on which the performers are David Childs and Cory Band.

Prelude on an Irish Folk Tune (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

The Irish folk tune, which appears towards the end of the piece, is Slane, a hymn tune version of the much older folk melody The Banks of the Bann. In Prelude on an Irish Folk Tune, fragments of the folk tune hint at what is to come later in the piece, but another folk-like tune is predominant. This later acts as a descant to Slane when it finally appears. Add a little Sparke sparkle to any concert with this lovely interlude. 04:00

The Irish Dancemaster - William Vean

During the eighteenth century a person called 'the Dance Master' made his appearance in Ireland. He was a travelling dance-teacher, who moved from one village to another to teach the people there how to dance. They were often flamboyant personalities, gorgeously dressed and holding a staff in one hand. In order to teach their pupils the difference between their right and left leg, the dance master used to tie a small bunch of straw or hay to their leg and then would order them to either lift their 'hay-leg' or their 'straw-leg'. The dancing masters used to stay in one particular village for about six weeks (if they were not claimed by a neighbouring village), after which they continued their journey. Having a famous dance master gave a village a certain distinction and did not seldom lead to boasting and pride. Also on account of the popularity of Celtic music in general at the moment, William Vean was inspired to writing 'The Irish Dance Master'. He 'teaches' you two dances, the Reel and the Jig. In between these two dances there is a short breathing space, during which a traditional Irish rhythm can be enjoyed.

Idyll on an Irish Folk Hymn - Ralph E. Pearce

Idyll on an Irish Folk Hymn was originally written for a concert of Irish music given by the Phoenix-based Salt River Brass. It was made at the request of a close friend of the composer, whose favourite melody this is. I was impressed by the treatment given to this beautiful tune, and when appearing as guest soloist with Salt River Brass, I asked Ralph to rearrange his setting as a cornet solo.Although the origin of the tune is not known, it is most often associated with hymn Lord of all hopefulness, with words by Jan Struther (1901-1953). It is quite often sung at wedding services, immediately after the signing of the register. It speaks of the desire that God goes with the couple into the future, helping them to fulfil their vows.
