Galop - In the Woods - Strauss, J.

Shooting (of hunting, shooting & fishing) is the theme here. The hunters stalk their game through the woods, no doubt dressed up in as complicated uniform as most brass bands don for contests, and proceed to shoot everything that moves. Johann Strauss the Younger even provides a sacrificial target bird for the end of the piece. For those of squeamish disposition, that is the moment to 'look away now'.

    Actaeon - Gareth Wood - -

This major work for brass band is based on the story of the Greek mythological character, Actaeon.Artemis was bathing in the woods when the hunter Actaeon stumbled across her, thus seeing her naked. He stopped and stared, amazed at her ravishing beauty. Once seen, Artemis punished Actaeon: she forbade him speech and if he tried to speak, he would be changed into a stag. Upon hearing the call of his hunting party, he cried out to them and was immediately changed into a stag. His own hounds then turned upon him and tore him to pieces as they did not recognise him.The music begins with Actaeon taunting his hounds. A slower section represents the young hunter (solo horn) leading to an up-tempo section as he rides through the forest. The central scherzo portrays a hunt. A gentle section (euphonium solo) potrays Artemis bathing under a waterfall. The music then depicts Actaeon being transformed into a stag with the final terrifying sounds of his body being torn apart!

POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE March No.1 (Brass Band) - Elgar, Edward - Littlemore, Phillip

Elgar's Pomp & Circumstance March No. 1was completed in July 1901 although the 'big tune' actually dates from earlier in that same year. It was premiered in Liverpool by its dedicatees, the Liverpool Orchestral Society, on the 19th October. It was repeated in London a few days later by Henry Wood at the Promenade concerts and the result was sensational, the audience roared its applause, and refused to allow the concert to continue. In order to restore order, Wood conducted the march three times - the only time in the history of the Promenade concerts that an orchestral item was accorded a double encore in Wood's lifetime. Duration: 6:40

Now a staple of the 'Last Night of the Proms', where it always manages a partial encore, and a fitting item for any such themed concerts. This new arrangement recreates the colour from the original orchestral version. This arrangement has been recorded by the Leyland Band, conducted by Thomas Wyss, and appears on the CD Crown Imperial . A soundclip is available here Item Code: TPBB-013 Duration: c.6''00"

Fantasia on British Sea Songs - Henry Wood - Phillip Littlemore

Henry Wood's medley? Fantasia on British Sea Songs was arranged in 1905 to mark the centenary of the Battle of Trafalgar. For many years it was as an indispensable item at the BBC's Last Night of the Proms concert although over recent years it has been dropped on a handful of occasions. Wood's arrangement comprised nine parts, although this transcription has been somewhat truncated to make it more manageable for a brass band concert. The movements selected are The Saucy Arethusa; Tom Bowling; Jack's THe Lad (The Hornpipe); Home; Sweet Home; See The Conquering Hero Comes; Rule Britannia.? Item Code: TPBB-062 Duration: 5'00"
