Smoke Sketches is Daniel Hall's first original work to be published in the Faber Music Brass Band Series. Daniel is one of the most gifted of the rising generation of composers writing for brass bands. Smoke Sketches was composed at the invitation of Brass Bands England for the Intermediate Section of the 2017 National Youth Brass Band Championships of Great Britain. This colourful, jazzy suite draws inspiration from the ancient art of gazing into smoke from fire to find stories through the act of divination. Into the Blaze suggests someone briskly fire-walking, barefoot, with unexpected sparks fizzling from the ground. A Lonesome Ember capturesthe fleeting life of a small ember, beginning insignificantly and gradually evolving into a larger being before disappearing into ash, while Spark of Light bristles with life and energy. Band Grade 3/4, duration 8 minutes.

A 'Malaguena' is a woman living in the Spanish port city of Malaga, on the southern coast of Spain, in the province of Andalucia. Lecuona's Malaguena was originally the sixth movement of his Suite Andalucia and has been performed in many versions by artists such as Connie Francis, Stan Kenton's Orchestra and Bill Haley and the Comets as well as featuring as part of the Broadway musical entitled Blast! Aurora Awakes was composed in 2020 for Youth Brass 2000. Sometimes referred to as the Northern Lights, Aurora Borealis is a natural light phenomenon in the Earth's s ky. Predominantly seen in high-latitude regions, they are a result of magnetosphere disturbances caused by solar wind. The resulting ionisation (the process of a molecule acquiring positive or negative charge) of atmospheric components emit light of varying colour and complexity. For those of you familiar with the composer's other space inspired works , Aurora Awakes is a slow alternative, exploring the tonal colour and lyricism of the brass band rather than its raw energy.
