Unbounded Love is a deeply moving work that bridges the gap between sacred tradition and personal tribute. Drawing inspiration from the beloved 18th-century hymn Ich bete an die Macht der Liebe (I Pray to the Power of Love), this arrangement transforms a timeless spiritual message into a profound musical experience. The foundation of this work lies in the 1822 melody by Dmitri Bortniansky. Originally set to the poetry of Gerhard Tersteegen, this dignified and contemplative theme has served as a cornerstone of ceremonial music for centuries, symbolising solace, reverence, and the liberating power of divine love. Unbounded Love is an intimate memorial dedicated to Hein Voskamp, a cherished soprano player and close friend of the composer. Born from a simple final request - to hear this hymn one last time - the piece became the composer's way of navigating grief and expressing gratitude when words were no longer enough. Composed for Strata Brass in 2020 as part of their COVID-19 induced, virtually recorded 'A Christmas Carol' (a new suite for brass bandlasting around 30 minutes in total), 'The Ghost of Christmas Past' is a lively and virtuosic cornet solo portraying the visions Scrooge is shown of his childhood. Beginning in a jovial mood, the ghost then shows Scrooge his early love life, before showing how Scrooge's unsympathetic and callous ways lead to his loss of love and friendship throughout the years as the music gets gradually darker and darker with each passing section. .

Its three movements contrast the extrovert and lyrical qualities of the traditional brass band. The fanfare with which the work opens involves the whole cornet section. The second movement is reflective in mood, beginning somewhat pensively on muted brass, and building to an emotional climax before subsiding back to a distant pianissimo chord. The finale is a fast dance, which with a final recapitulation of the opening fanfare drives on to a breathless close.Suitable for Advanced Youth/3rd Section Bands and aboveDuration: 12.00
