Gustav Holst composed almost 200 works, one being a very elegant and charming fantasy on the old English christmas carols: 'Good Christian Men, Rejoice'; 'God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen'; 'Come Ye Lofty, Come' and 'The First Nowell'. The fantasy called Christmas Day was originally written for Mixed Choir with Orchestra or Organ accompaniment. Robert van Beringen has arranged this work for concert band exactly 100 years later. His arrangement can be performed as an instrumental piece or with a Choir, making it suitable for any occasion.

Jacob de Haan begins his arrangement of the well-known hymn Allein Gott in der Hoh' sei Ehr (All Glory Be to God on High) with a quotation from his own Missa Katharina, a mass for choir, soprano, and band. To this melody he sets the Latin text from the last part of the Gloria. The chorale is then heard after an interlude and can, at the director's discretion, be accompanied by the choir singing in either German or English. A perfect work for church concerts.

Three Carols was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic as part of their Holiday Brass series and was premiered at Avery Fisher Hall by the New York Philharmonic Principal Brass and Canadian Brass. Originally for 10 players, soon after the premiere I decided to score the piece for brass band. The brass band version was first performed by the New York Staff Band.Through the years I have been intrigued by carious carols from different countries and the challenge of creating musical treatments that sound fresh and original. When commissioned to write these brass arrangements, I wanted to create contrasting movements that could be performed either as a set or individually and thought that three carols from different countries would allow the opportunity for that contrast. The featured carols are the traditional Polish carol Infant Holy, What child is this? with lyrics by William Dix and set to the English folk song Greensleeves and the lesser-known Catalonian carol Cold December flies away.- Joseph Turrin

In 1956 Sir Kenneth MacMillan created a one-act ballet for the Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet, London. He selected the music from the two sets of English Dances which Sir Malcolm Arnold had written in 1950 and 1951 to great acclaim. The composer wrote two new dances, a Sarabande and a Polka, especially for the ballet, which was premiered at Sadler's Wells Theatre in June 1956. The two new dances have taken on a life of their own in the concert hall and are typical Arnold: the Sarabande contains one of his most memorable melodies and the Polka shows him at his quirky, tongue-in-cheek best. L-O-V-E was written by Milt Gabler and Bert Kaempfert for the final album of the same name by the American singer and pianist Nat King Cole. This album, released in 1965, is largely regarded as a classic. Over the years, many cover versions have been made, including one by Michael Buble. In 2007, the English soul singer and songwriter Joss Stone recorded the song for the promotion campaign around the Coco Mademoiselle perfume by Chanel. Christopher Bond arranged this catchy music for brass band.

The English custom of 'Wassailing' is the seasonal act of singing carols door-to-door and wishing good health. The singers and dancers (often very poor) would do this in the hope of being offered a drink from the 'wassail bowl' - a warm broth of hot ale, fruit and spices; good sustenance for those who were cold and often homeless. It is thought that this carol (composer unknown) was composed c.1850. Duration: 2.30
