£134.99Sinfonietta: The Town Beneath the Cliff - Philip Sparke
Sinfonietta: The Town Beneath the Cliff was commissioned by Holmestrand Ungdomskorps from Vestfold in Norway. The work is in four movements: a spectacular fanfare followed by a 'moto perpetuo'-like toccata. The third movement Hymn is a beautiful piece of music allowing the band to show its musicality and sound. The last movement Scherzo Finale opens with a short phrase from Holmestrand's own 'town song' Holmestrandsangen, which comes again in full at the end of the piece, accompanied by a florid passage based on the opening theme.

The important musical elements of the piece are also doubled in several parts making the arrangement playable also with a limited instrumentation. All thematical material in this piece are presented in the first movement; "What Dreams are made of"The different themes finds it's natural place in this dreaming, sequencing process throughout the music. The development are based on"chain of thought" or association of ideas. There are no apparently logical development of the movements. I believe that the listener will experience the same as me; the apparently contradictions, and non-compatible sizes, will form aself-explanatory and organic unit at the end.

The Last Song - Ben Haemhouts
The Last Song is a beautiful and sad choral that begins very slowly and calmly. Gradually the instrumentation increases leading to a big climax. After this Grandioso ma con moto the instrumentation gets smaller and the piece comes to an end with the initial theme, but this time even slower than in the opening.

Pop groups enlarged the musical spectrum by combining jazz harmonies with rock 'n' roll rhythms. These experiments are now known as 'fusion'. Centennial Prelude - Jan Van der Roost
This short opening music was composed on commission of the symphonic band of Jan Van der Roost's village (= Kontich near Antwerp / Belgium). In 1991, this community band celebrated its 100th anniversary. After composing commissioned pieces from different countries (even from Japan), this was the most 'near' commission he ever received indeed!It is a short but varied piece, featuring all sections of the band. After a short introduction, played by the brass instruments, a crisp rhythm starts and boxes the main theme. After a second theme, played by brass and percussion, a short melodical passage brings some 'rest'. At the end, the fanfare of the introductionreoccurs.Although this "Centennial Prelude" isn't a really demanding piece, it sounds colourful and energetic. It has been recorded on CD by the band of the 'Royal Dutch Airforce' and the 'Desford Colliery Brass band'.

Variazioni in Blue - Jacob de Haan
Variazioni in Blue is a series of variations in which elements from the Blues, such as the specific 'blue notes', run throughout the piece. Following a stately introduction, which includes part of the theme, is an ornamental variation in 'classical style'. We then hear a variation in 'Blues style", followed by a fast variation with an Eastern European folklore feel. The 'Andante con espressivo' is particularly fine with its attractive harmonic changes. This variation develops into a repeat of the previous folklore variations with its 'major' variation forming a climax towards the end.

Bellum et Pax - Stijn Roels
Bellum et Pax is a composition describing the two ancient concepts of 'war' and 'peace.' While this piece appears to be one single movement, it consists of four sections that flow into one another. Mysterious and threatening tones lead the way into an epic battle between the chaos of war and enlightenment of peace. Peace triumphs, but menacing bass notes at the end symbolize the constant presence and threat of war and violence in the world.

In upstate New York lie the Catskill Mountains, an extraordinary combination of tranquillity and power, peace and majesty. Once seen they call you back again and again. New York ...or, to be precise, Manhattan.For anyone who is familiar with this bizarre and wonderful city, this 'picture' needs no explanation. For those not yet hooked, here is a foretaste of things to come.
