£55.00First Suite in E flat - Gustav Holst arr. Phillip Littlemore
Although completed in 1909, Gustav Holst's First Suite in E flat received its official premiere 11 years later at the Royal Military School of Music at Kneller Hall, on 23rd June 1920. There are three movements in the suite: Chaconne, Intermezzo and March. Holst himself said "As each movement is founded on the same phrase, the suite be played right through without a break." The Chaconne begins with a ground bass, repeated throughout the ensemble sixteen times as varying instrumental textures and variations of the theme are layered within it. The Intermezzo is light and brisk and features many soloistic passages. The March consists of two themes, the opening is a light march contrasted with a longer, more lyrical second theme. The movement concludes with both themes superimposed on one an another.This brass band arrangement includes the section omitted from the first movement of the Sydney Herbert transcription. £87.71'Odyssey' Variations (Brass Band) Kevin Norbury
'Odyssey' Variations was composed as a result of a commission in May 2020 from Five Lakes Silver Band and its musical director, Christopher Ward. This music is based on an original theme that I first used in an earlier composition, Odyssey, which was the test piece for the European Brass Band Championships, held at Munich, Germany, in April 1999. I distinctly remember getting into my hotel room and turning on the television to be greeted by news coverage of the Columbine High School shooting, so that piece has always held some significance for me, though because of a very sad coincidence. The melody was originally a cornet solo in the central slow section of Odyssey and pitched deliberately to test the soloist. I have, more recently attempted a straightforward choral setting of the melody, and the harmonies I use in the three chorale-style settings at the start of these variations are loosely based on that setting. The melody is a setting of the familiar words of Be Thou My Vision, an old Irish hymn, translated by Mary E. Byrne, and versified by Eleanor H. Hull. This highly descriptive work from the pen of Joel Collier will be an excellent choice for bands looking for a test piece, but equally as effective as a concert work. The composer writes: 'Britain - from the Latin Britannia, which is itself derived from the Greek Prettanike, originally taken from the Celtic word Pretani, meaning 'the painted ones'. While Julius Caesar made two brief invasions of Britain in 54 and 55 B.C.E., the real Roman conquest of the Island began in 43 C.E. under emperor Claudius. The conquest spanned decades, and pitted the Roman forces against resistance leaders such as Caratacus and Boudicca - powerful leaders Rome did not fully anticipate. Rome was ultimately victorious, and Londinium became the capital of the new province of Britannia, but even the might of Rome could never subdue the entire island. The Land of the Painted People is written in six parts. The first three - The Mists of the Plains, Tribal Honor, and Hymn to the Earth - paint a picture of the native Britons prior to the Roman invasion. The latter three - Invasion, Rebellion, and Submission - depict the decades-long struggle against Roman conquest.'
