Trimbeka is a composition which owes its existence to the anniversary of music society "de Vlecke" in Gorredijk. The name Gorredijk originates from "goor" or "gor", which means : bog. Along the marshy peat ran a "dijk" (the Dutch word for dike), called the Gordijk. The name of the village resembles that of the home town of the composer himself, who comes from a town in Twente called Goor. Three streams used to run through the area around Gorredijk. the historical name Trimbeets (Trimbeka), meaning three brooks, recalls this to mind. Gorredijk was a flourishing "Vlecke", i.e. large village, which was situated on an intersection of important connecting roads.The liveliness which this entailed is one of the distinctive elements in Trimbeka. Furthermore, ominous sounds possibly refer to the dangers of the bog, while the resonance of the merriment during the annual fair can also be heard. The slow middle movement is an ode to the beautiful landscape surrounding the village.

La Viuda Negra is a Spanish widow, dressed in black clothes. Her face is marked by traces of sorrow, but her speaking eyes and sanguineous appearance attracts the attention of everyone. Many man's heart should beat faster! What is the story of this mysterious woman? The black widow (Latrodectus Mactan) is also the nickname of a spider. This spider is well known for the distinctive black and red coloring of the female of the species and for the fact that she will occasionally eat her mateafter reproduction.

Charming Salzburg - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Henk Hogestein
Salzburg, birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, inspired Dutch composer Henk Hogestein to write this musical tribute. Mozart was born in this charming Austrian town in January 1756. The composition Charming Salzburg is based on a theme from Mozart's opera Die Zauberflote, which he completed in 1791. Thyellene depicts of a battle that took place on the 'Tielenheide' - a stretch of moorland near the Belgian village of Tielen in 1597. In that memorable battle Prince Maurice of Nassau, commander of the Dutch army, defeated Count Varax, a general of the Spanish army - with a considerably smaller troop than the enemy. This great heroic subject has been transformed into this equally great work for brass band, which won the third prize at the 2009 European Composers Competition.

Sinfonietta No. 1, written for brass band, was commissioned by the Dutch National Championships 2011 in Groningen. It also served as the test piece for the Swiss National Championships 2011 in Montreux, Switzerland. Unlike most of Johan de Meij's compositions, Sinfonietta No. 1 is an abstract, non-programmatic work. It consists of three movements, in which the thematic material of the opening measures - an upward fifth jump - returns in various shapes and forms throughout the piece. The slow middle section features solo passages by cello, English horn and bassoon, all starting with the same fifth jump. The final movement presents an Elgar-like march theme,interspersed with quotes from the second movement, and ending with the opening theme of movement I.

The lyrics to Der Mond ist aufgegangen (The Moon Is Risen) come from Matthias Claudius, one of Germany's best-known poets. The 1779 poem with the original title Abendlied (Evening song) was set to music by Johann Abraham Peter Schulz and has become perhaps the most famous Abendlied in the German-speaking world. Johann de Haan has created a delightful arrangement of this poignant melody. The wind orchestra can optionally be accompanied by a choir (Dutch and German texts are provided).
