The Lord is King (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Steadman-Allen, Ray

Ray Steadman-Allen was for many years the driving force in Salvation Army music. His publication list of both brass and vocal works can be measured literally by the hundred. 'The Lord is King' is arguably his crowning achievement of over twenty major works for brass band. Although described as a suite, the work is more symphonic in conception and scale as well as being formidable to perform. The work is based on the Welsh hymn tune 'Llangollen' to which the hymn 'The Lord is King, I own His power' are associated. The three movements derive inspiration from the lines 'My joy, my toil, my craftman's skill, all have their place, and serve His will' found in verse five of the hymn.

WINDOWS OF THE WORLD (Brass Band Set) - Graham, Peter

Commissioned by YBS Band, this is a kaleidoscopic six movement sequel to Cry of the Celts. The work provides solo opportunities for several principal players. Peter Graham takes us first to Latin America, then to Japan and onwards to Saharan Africa. We get a gentle reprieve via a nostalgic hint of the British Isles before we land in the melting pot of all styles, the USA. In this final section the driving swing section is abruptly stopped and a drum cadenza leads us back into the opening Latin music. The movements are: Amazonia; Rainforest; The Rising Sun; Drums of Thunder; Celtic Dream; Earth Walk. Any of the movements can be programmed individually. Some movements are recorded on QPRL215D Master Brass (Volume Thirteen). All movements are recorded on QPRL123D Windows of the World. Total Duration: 20:30.

    Bass Trombone Concerto

Written in 2006 for Roger Argente, Gareth Wood brings his considerable experience of writing for brass, and brass bands in particular, to an instrument not often blessed with opportunities for solo exposure. It is scored for soloist accompanied by traditional brass band line-up, including timpani and two percussion, and follows the standard three-movement pattern. In the first movement, the soloist launches straight into the musical argument with a low-lying repeated quaver figure punctuated by the band. A lyrical second subject in the high register is also entrusted to the soloist, and the movement comes to a thrilling conclusion. The slow movement opens softly with the percussion, and a mournful bass line sets the mood for a thoughtful long melody. It reaches a powerful climax, which subsides to a return of the opening mood. In the march-like finale, the soloist is pitted against a number of solo instruments from the band and a driving ostinato carries the momentum through to the blazing ending.Duration: 13:00 minutesPercussion: 3 Players playing timpani, bongos, bass drum, side drum, suspended cymbal, tam-tam, claves, triangle, tambourine, xylophone and glockenspielGrade 4: Moderately Difficult 1st Section Bands

    Funk

The driving rhythms and lush harmonies of funk music is a perfect vehicle for the tight, dynamic playing of a solid brass band. The brass sections of Tower of Power and Earth, Wind and Fire inspired players from the 1980s onwards and being part of this type of rhythmic force is a great experience. This piece is designed to be rewarding for all the performers and of course the most important group; the audience.Duration: 4:00 minutesPercussion: 2 Players playing drum kit, bongos and cowbell Grade 4: Moderately Difficult 1st Section Bands

    Capriol Suite - Phillip Littlemore

Peter Warlock, the pen name of Philip Heseltine, never settled into a conventional career. He had some short lived appointments, including one as a music critic for the Daily Mail, however he did get involved in editing, transcribing and arranging early music manuscripts, and writing a major study of the music of Delius. His first compositions, mainly songs, began to appear in 1917, at which time he had moved to Dublin to avoid possible conscription. It was at this time that he adopted the pseudonym Warlock. In 1922 he completed his first widely acknowledged masterpiece – the song-cycle the Curlew . His period of creativity continued only for a few years culminating in the composition of his most famous work, the Capriol Suite ?in 1925. The original piano duet version of the work was a great success and was quickly followed by the version for string orchestra, from which this arrangement is made. The Capriol Suite is a set of dances in the renaissance style, and is very loosely based on tunes found in Arbeau’s Orchestographie of 1588. The suite consists of six movements: Basse-Danse , is a lively dance for older folk followed by a stately Pavane ; a delicate, yet lively Tordion is followed by Bransles (pronounced ‘Brawl’, a fast country dance which works its way into a frenzy, continuously building in speed and excitement. This is followed by Pieds-en-l’air , perhaps the Suite’s most popular movement, with its beautifully serene lines before the final movement, Matachins , an exhilarating sword dance with its driving rhythm, culminating in violent dissonances bringing the piece to a spirited close. Danceries (Set II)

Danceries Set II continues the format established with the previous Danceries (1999) by using tunes and dances from Playford’s 17th Century Dancing Master to form the basis of an extended dance suite. In this set, the melodies have become more abstracted and project only a distant echo of their original forms. As before, each movement is self-contained, colourful and direct, with its own distinct mood. The outer movements, Jennie’s Bawbee and Peascod’s Galliarda , share driving percussion with an almost military air. Tom Tinker’s Toye and Heart’s Ease , the second and third movements, are both settings of original melodies. All movements are more extended than in the first set, with a freer use and approach to the material, supported by a greater variety of harmonic colouring. The result is a richer, even more exhilarating set of dances.? Item Code: 0-571-57077-1 Duration: 15'00"

East Coast Pictures - Phillip Littlemore

East Coast Pictures is a suite of three short ‘pictures’ that were inspired by several visits by the composer to a small part of the USA’s East Coast, an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people. Shelter Island is a small island situated almost at the end of Long Island, a few hours’ drive east of New York. In the summer it becomes a crowded tourist trap, but in the winter it is gloriously deserted, and bravely faces the onslaught of the turbulent Atlantic, shrouded in sea mists and driving rain. In upstate New York lie the Catskill Mountains, an extraordinary combination of tranquillity and power, peace and majesty. Once seen they call you back again and again. New York ...or, to be precise, Manhattan. For anyone who is familiar with this bizarre and wonderful city, this ‘picture’ needs no explanation. For those not yet hooked, here is a foretaste of things to come. The three movements are also available separately and are Shelter Island , The Catskills and New York . A sound clip of the last movement, New York , can be found here Item Code: 0-571-56425-9 Duration: c.15'30"
