Northern Landscapes - Peter Graham
The four movements of Northern Landscapes provide musical mood pictures of various aspects of Northern working life. 1) Industry opens the suite with the bustle of factory machinery, followed attacca by 2) Seascapes which evokes the calmness of local waters during a fishing expedition. 3) Earth Dance references the mining industry where the blackness of the environment is mirrored by the darkness of the music while 4) Flight evokes the path of an aircraft on its maiden journey in this tribute to the aircraft industry. Northern Landscapes has its origins in music written for the Ulster Orchestra Brass Quintet. This revised and updated version for brass band was commissioned by the Boarshurst (Greenfield) Silver Band, with National Lottery funds, supported by the Arts Council of England. It was set as the 2003 National Brass Band Championships Area Third Section Test-Piece.

£24.95The M-lisada March - Jim Trott
All proceeds from "The M-lisada March" are donated to Brass for Africa, a charity making a positive change to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in Africa through brass music and brass music education. The composer, Jim Trott, is the founder of a charity called Brass for Africa and one of the organizations the charity supports and works with is the MLISADA organization located in the slums of Kampala, Uganda. MLISADA is a home for ex-street kids, orphans and vulnerable children and at the heart of the home is music and dance. MLISADA have a junior and senior brass band and the bands earn income to feed the home by playing at functions and marches. Jim has often been with the band as they work up anthems and themes for their various engagements and he thought it would be great for MLISADA to have their own theme. So, he has written this short March for these inspiring young people and is delighted that they love to play it whenever they can.

Hava Nagila (the title means 'let us rejoice') is perhaps the best known example of a style of Jewish music called 'klezmer'. Klezmer music originated in the 'shtetl' (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as 'klezmorim', had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages.'Klezmer' is a Yiddish term combining the Hebrew words 'kley' (instrument) and 'zemer' (song) and the roots of the style are found in secular melodies, popular dances, Jewish 'hazanut' (cantorial music) and also the 'nigunim', the wordless melodies intoned by the 'Hasidim' (orthodox Jews).Since the 16th century, lyrics hadbeen added to klezmer music, due to the 'badkhn' (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the 'Purimshpil' (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. The melody of Hava Nagila was adapted from a folk dance from the Romanian district of Bucovina. The commonly used text is taken from Psalm 118 of the Hebrew bible.

This work was commissioned by Boosey & Hawkes Band Festivals (with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain) for the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, held at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on 7th October 1984.Dances and Arias is in one continuous movement, but as the title suggests is a series of alternating fast and slow sections as follows: Dance - Aria I - Dance (scherzo) - Aria II - Dance. The opening dance is energetic and introduces a four-note motif (on trombones) which is the basis for much of the melodic material in the work. Throughout, there is a continuous process of thematic cross-reference and transformation.The first aria unfolds a long melody on solo cornet, eventually continued by all the solo cornets, and dissolving into a shimmering harmonic background (muted cornets, horns and baritones) over which is heard a brief self-quotation on solo tuba. This leads into the second dance, a frenetic scherzo, followed by the second aria, in the style of a lament (solo euphonium, followed by two flugel horns). This builds to a powerful climax which subsides, leaving the percussion to introduce the final toccata-like dance. It transforms material from the opening before a coda brings the music to a triumphant close. The large percussion section is an integral part in the work and uses a wide variety of instruments including timpani, glockenspiel, vibraphone, xylophone, tubular bells, tom-toms, snare drum, bongos and tam-tam.The work is dedicated to my brother and sister.- Edward GregsonDuration: 14.00

A three movement suite depicting aspects of Cornish life and culture.The first movement, Sea Shanties, uses two contrasting call-and-response melodies. The second of these is playful in nature and appears in a number of guises, some more discordant than others, reflecting the crew's use of the shanty to let the captain know what they thought of him! Having passed by, the ship disappears into the sea mist. Laments were traditionally reserved for occasions of the death of a member of the clan. In forming the melody for Celtic Lament I had in mind the type of sorrowful song that would suite the elegiac nature of such an occasion.The last movement of the suite attempts to catch the spirit of the Furry Dance, the ancient dance that heralds the coming of spring. It resembles a farandole but is probably better described as an unashamed romp.My intention was to make Cornish Pastiche readily accessible to both players and listeners. The language is unashamedly tonal but is treated with some harmonic twists to add occasional piquancy. The technical demands on the players are meant to be moderate but conductors and players are asked to observe the different layers, especially in the Basse Dance, and not overload the texture with over-zealous weight on the melodic line.- Rob WiffinDuration: 11.15

We imagine them in the fields, one by one coming to life and joining in an extraordinary and chaotic dance); Sweetheart Abbey (Inspired by the ruined abbey near Dumfries founded by Dervorguilla of Galloway, in memory of her husband. After his death, she kept his embalmed heart with her for the rest of her life and it was buried alongside her when she died); Clanjamfrie (A drunken rabble meet in a remote Highland pub and proceed to talk nonsense and dance the night away). Peter Warlock's set of set of six dances in renaissance style, Capriol Suite, is by far his most famous work. The suite consists of Basse-Danse, a lively dance for older folk; a stately Pavane; a delicate, yet lively Tordion; Bransles (pronounced 'Brawl'), a fast country dance which works its way into a frenzy, continuously building in speed and excitement; Pieds-en-l'air, with its beautifully serene lines and Mattachins, an exhilarating sword dance with its driving rhythm, culminating in violent dissonances bringing the piece to a spirited close. This is a new arrangement suitable for any band, including those in the 4th Section that relish a challenge. Percussion has been added in all but one of the movements, and is for two players. The Graces of Love (Le Gratie d'Amore) is the title of a book published in 1602 by Cesare Negri, the famous dance master of the Milan court in the Renaissance. It contains numerous dance tunes and precise descriptions of courtly dances. It also includes the tune Il bianco fior (The White Flower) on which the first movement of the present piece is based. A vigorous dance in three-four, it leads to an acceleration and a sudden shift to an even meter towards the end. The second movement, calm and contemplative in character, features the tune Vaghe bellezze ... (Veiled Beauty ...). Widely spaced melodic parts surround two solos during which the tune is varied and developed. Finally, the third movement contains a saltarello with a hypnotic rhythm, ending the work with flair and gusto. Duration: 11:30
