Pyrotechnic Variations on 1812 was composed for Brass Band Schoonhoven, and used as part of their programme for Brass in Concert in November 2016.'Pyrotechnic Variations' is a modern day twist on Tchaikovsky's famous '1812' Overture. A heraldic opening introduces some familiar themes, before leading into a frantic virtuosic passage (especially for euphonium!), where quotes can be heard all through the band. This subsides into the central 'slow' section (via the unusual route of a bass and drum kit feature). After a whisper quiet reintroduction of the main theme, we build to the 'canon' finale - ending in a glorious celebratory style!

Concerto for EuphoniumIn League with Extraordinary Gentlemen combines two of composer Peter Graham's life interests - composition and 19th century popular fiction. Each of the concerto's three movements takes its musical inspiration from extraordinary characters who have transcended the original genre and have subsequently found mass audiences through film, television and comic book adaptations.The first movement follows a traditional sonata form outline with one slight modification. The order of themes in the recapitulation is reversed, mirroring a plot climax in the H.G. Wells novella The Time Machine (where the protagonist, known only as The Time Traveller, puts his machine into reverse bringing the story back full circle).The Adventure of the Final Problem is the title of a short story published in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle. This is an account of the great detective's final struggle with his long-time adversary Professor Moriarty at the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland. The music takes the form of a slowed down lndler (a Swiss/Austrian folk dance) and various acoustic and electronic echo effects call to mind the alpine landscape. The final bars pose a question paralleling that of Conan Doyle in the story - have we really seen the last of Sherlock Holmes?The final movement, The Great Race, (available separately) follows Phileas Fogg on the last stage of his epic journey "Around the World in Eighty Days" (from the novel by Jules Verne). The moto perpetuo nature of the music gives full rein to the soloist's technical virtuosity. As the work draws to a conclusion, the frantic scramble by Fogg to meet his deadline at the Reform Club in Pall Mall, London, is echoed by the soloist's increasingly demanding ascending figuration, set against the background of Big Ben clock chimes.In League with Extraordinary Gentlemen was first performed in the brass band version by David Thornton and the Black Dyke Band, conductor Nicholas Childs, at the RNCM Concert Hall Manchester on January 30, 2009.

Complete suite also available.Reflections is the second movement of the suite War of the Worlds which was commissioned by the Senzoku Gakuen College of Music Saxophone Orchestra and first performed by them in the Maeda Hall, Japan on June 29 2012, the composer conducting. The music is dedicated to Professor Shin-ichi Iwamoto. The transcription for brass band was first performed by the Brighouse & Rastrick Band, conductor David King, in the Bridgewater Hall Manchester on September 8 2012.The suite takes inspiration from the 1953 film script adaptation of the famous HG Wells novel and key scenes from the film are set as individual movements: Reflections - here mankind contemplates a life forever changed as the invaders progress their colonisation of Planet Earth.

£81.99A Bandsman's Overture (Brass Band - Score and Parts)
A Bandsman's Overture was commissioned by British Bandsman magazine to celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2012. It was premiered by Black Dyke Band, conducted by Dr Nicholas Childs, at a special anniversary concert held in Symphony Hall, Birmingham, on July 1st.British Bandsman was for a period known as British Bandsman and Contest Field, following an amalgamation of two magazines. The then owner, John Henry Iles, celebrated this new title by commissioning Ord Hume to write the famous march, BB & CF. As a salute to this heritage A Bandsman's Overture starts with the four notes, B(b)-B(b)-C-F, a motive which permeates an opening fanfare, which contrasts a busy opening with a more legato central section. This gives way to a bustling Vivo, based on repeated staccato notes. A change of key heralds a central cantabile melody, first on euphoniums and baritone and then played by the full band, which is followed by a short development section. This leads to a transformed reprise and a return of the opening fanfare, decorated this time by florid muted cornets.Duration: 6:00

£37.12Polonaise from 'Scenes de Ballet' (Brass Band) Glazunov arr. Rob Bushnell
Alexander Glazunov was a Russian composer who was a gifted musician from childhood. He was seen as the natural heir to the nationalist revolution that had started with the Mighty Handful. Despite quickly turning from this to absolute forms of music, taking a keen interest in ballet music, his compositions still alludes to Russian folk tunes. He wrote four dance compositions, of which Scenes de Ballet was the first in 1894. The suite Scenes de Ballet, opus 52 has eight movements and was dedicated to the orchestra of the Russian Opera, St Petersburg. First performed in 1895 at a concert of the Imperial Music Society with Glazunov conducting. This arrangement of the final movement is for the British-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. £33.41Men of Harlech (Brass Band) Welsh Traditional arr. Alex McGee
This contemporary take by Alex McGee on the Welsh folk song Men of Harlech will be an entertaining addition to concert programmes. The arranger writes: 'Men of Harlech is perhaps one of the most well known of all traditional Welsh folk songs, but not like this. This setting was inspired by a composer who I first encountered as a 14-year-old playing in his first regional brass band, Gareth Wood. Upon learning of the death of Gareth I felt compelled to honour his memory and his music in composition. I struck upon the idea to do what he had done to the tune Sosban Fach to Men of Harlech, to take the tune as the raw material and try to craft it into something new yet recognisable, modern yet accessible. The work attempts to highlight what for me are the underlying characteristics of we Welsh; prone to melancholy but quick to find joy, contradictory, inviting, welcoming and warm but capable of housing a fierce streak of nationalistic pride. I dedicate this work to Gareth Wood and thank him for his music.' This sprightly march was the result of a request for a march in traditional style, incorporating a sacred tune that is popular in Holland. It was commissioned by Egbert Scheffer and Brass Band Valerius. The mood is distinctly chirpy and jovial, with a lightness of touch and a generous dose of good humour. £66.83Pyrenean Carol Suite (Brass Band) David Taylor
This attractive suite for brass band by David Taylor features five traditional carols from the Pyrenees region of Spain, as follows: i. Nadal Tindaire (Jingling Christmas) - Occitan traditional This Occitan Christmas song tells of musical instruments used to celebrate the Nativity - 'fifes and trumpets, timpani and pipes, or you, clear little bells, along with the angels' choir.' ii. Gabriel's Message (Birjina Gaztetto Bat Zegoen) - Basque traditional The most widely-known of the chosen carols, honouring Jesus's mother Mary, this is often sung in its English version, but the melody came from the Basque country. The Basque words were adapted from the Mediaeval song Angelus ad Virginem. Here, we feature the flugel horn. This movement was originally written on its own, with organ accompaniment, for the composer's wife, Diane Scott. iii. El Noi de la Mare (The Child of the Mother) - Catalan traditional A beautiful Catalan carol celebrating the birth of Jesus, telling of the tasty gifts that the singer would bring - 'Raisins and figs and nuts and olives; Raisins and figs and honey and mato [a Catalan dessert cheese traditionally served with honey.]' Here we feature the euphonium. The tune was made famous by guitarist Andres Segovia, who used it as a favourite encore, and by John Rutter, who made a widely-used setting for choir. iv. Paure Satan (Poor Satan) - Occitan traditional This rather unusual carol tells of the pain that Satan is put to by the arrival of the infant Jesus. Its mocking and sarcastic tone is reflected here, where the tuba soloist (as Satan) is given musical trouble throughout by the other parts. At first they conflict with the soloist, then the soloist makes overtures of friendship, which are treated with suspicion followed by contempt. The soloist finally gives in to their accompaniment (or do they?). There are plenty of opportunities for little theatrical touches here, if the tuba player is so inclined! The tuba part in this movement is notably more difficult than the rest of the music, and a number of optional changes have been marked to make the part easier to play, if so desired. The player is also welcome to add suitable extra embellishments to taste if they wish, within the character of the music. v. Fum, Fum, Fum! - Catalan traditional A favourite Catalan Christmas song for centuries, this rousing melody provides a fitting way to round off the suite, with its repeated rhythmic refrain of the nonsense title phrase. It tells of the Nativity, and then it tells of the celebratory feasting and good times that the singers look forward to to honour it. Although the suite is intended to be performed whole, it is also intended for usage with a selection of movements on occasions where a shorter piece is wanted. Suggested formats include a single movement alone (2, 3, and 5 are likely most appropriate), a pair of movements (any of the first four, plus 5), and a suite of three or four movements (1 and 5, plus one or two of 2, 3, or 4 in the middle). It is suggested that a good way to design a 'pick-your-own-suite' from the movements is to think of the earlier movements as introductory to the final movement.
