Flashback was written for Lee Rigg and the Wardle Academy Youth Band and opened their winning programme at the 2022 European Youth Championships (Development Section) in Birmingham England.Prior to his transition to the conductors podium Lee was a long serving member of the Black Dyke Band and considered by many (including myself) to be perhaps the world's greatest repiano cornet player!In many respects our careers have run in parallel and a number of my works over the years have included solos with Lee in mind. The Greek word hypernikon roughly translates as More Than Conquerors, the motto of Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts, the commissioner of this piece. The work is inspired by David Rox's very own name, the first two letters of his name, D and A, sets the first theme is in D major, with these notes being the tonic and dominant of the scale. After the stately intrada, the tempo accelerates and the festive feel of the march emerges. The trio melody serves as a beautiful contrast before finally ending with the opening theme in a grand tutti.Duration: 3.45

Written for Birmingham Citadel Band to play at their annual carol concert at Symphony Hall, Birmingham, this piece tells the story of the Nativity using the carols Who is He? and Calypso Carol. Brief appearances are made by the shepherds (While Shepherds Watched), the angels (Ding Dong! Merrily on High) and the wise men (The Kings' March and We Three Kings of Orient are). The music finishes with a majestic setting of the chorus of Who is He?, reminding us of baby Jesus.

Alan Turing is considered the father of modern computational science and much, if not all, of our modern computer technology and the connectivity that we now take for granted is born of the work of this one great, but troubled man. His famous test was designed to prove whether artificial intelligence (AI) could successfully imitate human thought. The single movement of The Turing Test is essentially non-programmatic, but it does seek to show something of the emotion and colour of Turing's life in its different sections. The composer employs bi-tonality and complex rhythms to show opposing worlds colliding. At the end of each test, we must decide: has true AI been born? Duration: 19.45

Dark Arteries was commissioned by Rambert Dance Company and first performed in May 2015 with the Tredegar Town Band sharing the stage with Rambert dancers. Dark Arteries is a personal and at times highly wrought response to the Miners Strike and its aftermath. It is in three movements, the first and last are expansive, with widely contrasting sound worlds, from dark, brooding melodies and the haunting sounds of solo flugel horn to wild syncopations on cornets, suggestive of an imposing, but often bleak mining landscape. Suitable for 1st Section Bands and above. Duration: 16.00

The Canticle of the Sun was commissioned by Birmingham Symphonic Winds conductor Keith Allen for Simone Rebello. The work is based on the canticle written by St. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226) whose ideas that nature and the material world were gifts from God and should be valued and appreciated. The brass band version was made especially for a studio recording by the Black Dyke Band conducted by Nicholas J. Childs with Simone Rebello on percussion. Duration: 13.00

Raveling, Unraveling - In Search of 'La Valse' was written for the Cory Band as their own-choice test piece for the 2016 European Brass Band Championships in Lille. The piece found its genesis in Sparke's The Unknown Journey (2014) for concert band, and the use of Ravel's La Valse as a structural undercurrent to the original piece is an act of reverence. Sparke's aim was to produce a work that is organic rather than episodic in nature. The composer's view is that little in music does this better than La Valse and for this reason he uses various sections of this masterpiece, both manipulated and quoted verbatim (including much of its stunning closing passages) to provide the overall geography of his new work. As the music progresses, more of the Ravel appears, surfacing completely as the piece reaches its climax - a gesture of homage to the French master.Duration: 16:30

There are three parts: Approaching the Great Saint-Bernard Pass depicting snowy mountains and the determined march of the Napoleonic Army; The Emperor Napoleon a noble and heroic theme, accompanied by stately fanfares with an exotic flavour; and Onwards, to the Empire! describing Napoleon's relentless drive to expand the French empire across the globe at. This piece was first performed directly in front of the Napoleon Museum in Arenenberg, Switzerland in Summer 2016. Duration: 10.00
