Gippsland - Alex F. Lithgow - John Dutton

Alexander Frame Lithgow (1870 - 1929) was a Scottish-born, New Zealand and Australian based composer and bandleader, known as the "Sousa of the Antipodes".In 1876, the Lithgows emigrated to Invercargill, New Zealand. After initially having cornet lessons from his father, Alex joined the Invercargill Garrison Band at the age of 11, and progressed to principal cornet by the time he was 16.At the age of 17 his first composition, Wairoa, was published, and so began a productive life of composition, including approximately 200 marches, as well as numerous pieces for band, orchestra, piano and voice. He died in 1929 a few months short of his 60th birthday and at his funeral, massed bands played one of his most famous marches, The Invercargill.

Ruslan & Ludmilla - Mikhail Glinka - Robert Childs

Glinka's Ruslan & Ludmilla was first performed on December 9, 1842, in St.Petersburg.Once a popular and influential composer, Mikhail Glinka (1804-1857) is primarily remembered today for two operas: A Life for the Tsar (1836) and Ruslan and Ludmilla (1842). The latter, based on the work that brought poet Alexander Pushkin his first success in 1820, seems both a perfect operatic subject and an impossibility.A complicated fairy tale of love overcoming all obstacles, it features a flying dwarf who gets his power from his beard, a fight with a giant disembodied head, a rescue foiled, a slain hero resurrected, and a happy ending with the lovers reunited!Glinka worked intermittently on the Opera for five years and left the composition of the overture to the last minute. Despite the inventiveness of the music and its many memorable melodies, the Opera Ruslan and Ludmilla was a failure. Nevertheless the Overture is a firm favourite and here we have an expertly crafted arrangement for brass band from the pen of Dr Robert Childs.

Prelude and Liebestod (Tristan) - Wagner, R.

The beginning and end of Wagner's opera Tristan and Isolde are two of the most frequently played of the composer's operatic excerpts in orchestral concerts. Following in the footsteps of Alexander Owen who produced an arrangement of the Prelude alone at the turn of the 19th to 20th century, with the capabilities of Bands being now so much further advanced I took up the challenge of a version for our times together with Isolde's broken-hearted Song of Death that closes the opera.Glorious music, that is still 'modern' today in painting the romance of the title characters. Difficult, yes, but rewarding, absolutely.
